No. The internet is what allows people to observe others who live radically different lifestyles, much of which is understood to be exaggerated if not outright lies.
But the term “keeping up with the Joneses” has been around a long time, so it has long been a factor if not as widespread and intense.

Yes. Everyone gathered around the radio popular broadcast then TV with no reruns! Sports without instant replay. Relying much more on public transit and it had better be on time! Newspapers in two to three editions a day. This is really a great question but you're right!!

No. For one thing it was a different time. Women didn't used to work which means they were dependent on a man. So these women had to choose well. These women couldn't just f*** a 100 guys hoping that they'd get it right with one of them like today.

And the men knew that a woman that chose to marry him would likely want to stick it out. Because to do so would be social suicide for her. And forget about remarriage. No guy would want another guys used goods. If it didn't work out with that guy why would it for him? So guys knew whe. They chose a wife she'd be much much more likely to stick it out and try to fix then relationship today.

The reason why FOMO exists is because most people are in all relationships ankle deep anymore. They don't want to go any deeper because then it'll be harder to extract themselves when the t need to. Which kind of sums up people's view on relationships nowadays. I don't even know why most people bother if that is their attitude. But I also know the reason for that. Because most relationships today are about status. Everyone reads like balance sheets. What does this person bring to my life? How does this person cause my stock? Again I don't know why people bother. Their life is one great big facade, show for the world.

Well, in that specific case probably a big factor would be that women couldn't hide their body count before birth control unless they were infertile, also the fact that all STDs were incurable before WWII.

As much? No. In the past generations the phenomenon was limited to immediate neighbors and coworkers and people one would see in person. Now we see people from around the world living the "good life" and that insideous sin, covetousness, takes over.

That could be argued both ways, you miss out on a lot with a family, and you miss out on a lot without a family. Though you can't really have it both ways, money can't buy time.

Definitely not. Even if that's simply because previous generations didn't have social media blasting their brains with images of everything they don't have in life.

I'd agree that it ramps up the pressure to insane degrees. "Why aren't you in the Caiman Isles this summer?" I don't even bother with having social media aside from selling stuff on FB seeing stuff like that.

That is tough to argue with, credit card companies would be looking lean as hell without that envy and excess consumption to keep up with someone else's lifestyle.

The average debt in 2000 was like 4 grand, which includes mortgages, student loans and what not, it almost tripled by 2011.

Fear of missing out, it could be from a sale, influencer, anything really. Basically envy or apprehension from wanting something you don't have because you see that someone else does have it.

Easiest example I can think of is people buying new cars they can't afford to keep up with other people buying new cars they can't afford.
