It was never “king”. It was novel, but many people didn’t have it because the troubles and costs exceeded the value. The internet only thrived because of advantages to banking and business. Private use didn’t really factor in until the internet was much more widely available, more affordable and things like social media were being developed.
Lol :) I remember that, I can ever hear the little noise just looking at that. :))) it’s only funny if you went through that.
i was in elementary when we got our first computer and everyone called us rich.
I remember being impatient for it back then too! Waiting for it to connect. Especially at night when I didn’t want anybody to hear it connecting lol
No, maybe it’s just a function of my parent's wealth, but as long as I can remember, the internet just worked! I don’t ever remember having to do anything to get online except open my browser! But I wasn't able to access the internet without parental permission until like 2016.
Laura 🤗 🥰
Not old enough lol
@PeachyPie93 Probably! But i’m definitely NOT going to apologize for when I was born. That was beyond my control.
@CrazyGirl2 In the old days you got on the internet using a modem connected to your telephone line. The modem actually dials the phone number if the service provider and you are routed to the internet from there. It did what was called a handshake which was a series of tones that navigated the connection. They sort of went away in the mid 1990s.
@exitseven Thank you sweetie. But all of that went right over my head. I understood nothing except for the part about tones that would be emitted, as that is a wave file online that people often post to various webs websites. To someone my age,, that reads about as useful as instructions for how to start and drive a Ford Model T. LOL 😂 🤣 🤣 🤣 😂
Thank you sweetie, Laura 🤗 🥰
The difference is now we have network cards with giga hertz speed and cables sendinging plenty of gigabytes like usb,
so it should take faster than you can lift your finger from the mouse... but it takes a million million million million herz instead. That is horrible.

Dial up was fun until someone had to make a phone call.
Yeah the number for the local network was busy often and then took forever to load and no one could call me until I signed off
The dial up days were something & I remember there were only three numbers you could dial for residential service from my Internet provider that were listed. However from time to time I would get a busy signal on all three numbers & it would really piss me off. Long story short at work I noticed we had the same internet & for some reason their internet was faster & never had a busy signal so I went into settings & wrote down the number they were dialing into & I changed my home Internet to that number & never had a problem again.
1200 baud was lightening speed compared to 300 baud. optical and internet really changed the world, and fast.
Yep, I remember being in high school when my parents got a Compaq and we had AOL dial up where all the chat rooms you were always asked A/S/L lol
I remember my Tandy 1000 with 16 colors 8 mb's with a add on 40 Mb hard card, and local BB's and then joined Earthlink, rather than AOL. I thought I was cool back then.
Born in 1979, so that's a yes. My dad had modems, but I didn't get to use them. Internet came to the Netherlands in 1993.
My first computer was a Commodore 64, I must have been 7 or something.
When we lived out of town in the woods we had it. I used to hate when my mom made calls which is why I would mainly explore the web at night.
I started to use the internet around 2010... lol
I still have my trusty old Zyxel 19.200 Baud modem somewhere at home. 🙂
Yes, I had a 2400 baud modem and thought it was great
I lived for several years with 1200 baud AOL dialup. Was amazed when it got so fast at 9600 baud.
I'm old enough to remember life before the internet.
Yes my mom always got mad at my brother tying up the phone line while on the internet lol. How far we have come.
We had Adelphia cable internet when I was a child so I never experienced that. I apparently missed it by a few years.
Of course, you would sometimes leave the office then return online to still wait.
Yes needed a 2nd phone line just to use it. It was the first social media.
The aol sfx was a song, right? Technically? Kinda like windows startup?
... No 😭😭😭😭
I remember when phones were attached to the wall.
Yes, the old Windows 98 days.
horrible noises included.
I know when there was no internet.
Definitely remember those days well lol.
And someone would pick up the phone and boom! Connection broken
nope
I remember BBS's.
I am! I hated it
