Not saying you can’t care about both. But what’s more important for you?

The economy and hyperinflation impacts everybody. It especially impacts the working class and minorities who are struggling just to get by day by day.

Sure some people are more fortunate than others. If you are high income earner and/or were given raises that matched inflation then you could care less about this. Some people are financially supported by others and don’t have to worry about paying rent, mortgage, putting food on the table, etc. So maybe this hasn’t hurt you but you would have to be blind and/or very arrogant to see how bad things have gotten inflation wise in the last 4 years.

Abortion is a sticky topic. I am not going to judge any woman on her who had a past abortion or plans on getting one.

But I just have to ask is having an unplanned pregnancy some sort of an inevitable event for women? Is it just 100% unavoidable that this is going to happen to you?

You want to have sex, fine. I also know that no contraceptive is 100% reliable. But really if you and your partner are responsible the chances of having an accident are very low nowadays. Not impossible but not likely.

I just don’t understand why abortion is such a huge deal given the problem can be avoided in the place if you are a responsible adult.

Anyway I plan on getting some long rants and angry responses on the second part of what I said above. But just saying.

Definitely hyperinflation/economy. As far as abortion rights go, they haven't gone away--they've just been left for each individual state to decide. So several states will actually end up with MORE abortion rights than were available under Roe. And since everyone can avail themselves of this newfangled technology known as a plane ticket, that means that abortion rights have actually INCREASED for most Americans due to the end of Roe.

The whole point of the overturn was to return the decision to the states. There's no congressional backing for a ban and it would probably get vetoed right away or overturned in short order. So yeah--that's just a fever dream.

Inflation and the economy effect everyone. It's really a MUCH bigger deal. The VAST majority of people will go through their entire life without every bumping up against any real-life scenario that involves abortion. And virtually everyone who DOES have that scenario can solve it by going to another state for a week.

Even though I am mostly pro life I am AGAINST a nationwide abortion ban. Because that would be a return to centralized power.

It will never happen anyway. Most conservatives don’t want top down big government control anyway.

Also why is the GOP so scared of letting the people vote on the issue?
In Louisiana, the GOP controlled legislature refused to put the issue on the ballot.
In Ohio, the GOP campaigned hard to make it harder for citizens to get issues to the ballot, but the people voted against the GOP on that. In every state that has strict abortion bans, it was the stage legislatures, NOT the people who voted on it. Every time the people have voted on it, even in deep red states like Kansas, the pro-life side lost.
If the GOP is against top down gov, why not let the people vote? Nothing is less top-down than direct democracy!

@OtterMan68 I do not want a nationwide abortion ban. It will never happen anyway. But I know pro life activists went way to far. I’m like “it took 50 years to overturn roe vs. wade. Hold your horses. Slow your roll”. Trump himself says he doesn’t want a nationwide abortion ban. Since when has Trump minced his words on what he wants?

But on the flip side Gavin Newsom was allowing tax payer funded abortions in California for visitors. Uber providing free rides for women seeking abortions.

Anyway out of EVERYTHING that has changed in our culture this one of the very few isolated changes that went conservative. There were death threats on Supreme Court justices lives too. I don’t remember Supreme Court justices being threatened when Obergefell v. Hodges (nationwide legalization of gay marriage) was passed in 2015.

I would also add, that 20 years from now, if you were to look at a time series plot of number of abortions performed in the US, you would not be able to see any difference at the point where Roe was overturned. It just doesn't matter as far as access goes, because as it turns out, we do have access to travel to different states.

And again, please DO wake me up if ever anyone gets arrested for traveling to another state. I'm happy to change my mind then.

Finally, to put my cards on the table, I'm pro-choice, but anti-Roe because I'm a big believer in the Federalist system of the US--specifically the 10th Amendment which states that ALL powers not explicitly enumerated in the Constitution are reserved for the states.

I can’t control hyperinflation with my individual purchases. I can’t make decisions that will ultimately affect such huge notions on such a small scale. However, the removal of my ability to choose what I do or don’t do in pregnancy is not something I consider viable and so I will prioritize getting that choice back before I prioritize learning what choices can change the economy as a singular consumer.

I remember seeing the stat a few years back, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Last time I wrote on the topic was probably in the early to mid 2000s. So I had to kind of fiddle with the search parameters on google, but found some stuff that seems familiar. It appears that it is the case that women currently are more pro-choice than men. This wasn't always the case though.
The stats I was able to eventually find showed some interesting stuff.

Yeah so in 2013 ~57% of women were against abortion according to Gallup. In 2024 Pew says ~64% of women are in favor of abortion in most circumstances which is a pretty wild swing. I wonder if there's some distinction if they were to poll mothers in particular.

The United States hasn’t experienced inflation like this since the Carter administration. And yes I know that some other countries are faring far worse. I read an article about a crazy statistic that inflation in Turkey was at something like 79%.

But the hyperinflation in the United States was directly impacted by the Biden administration via 1) crushing regulations on domestic oil/energy production 2) giant omnibus spending packages like the incredible oxymoron “Inflation reduction act”.

In all fairness some inflation would of been inevitable given all the insane government spending during the COVID lockdown. But still it was greatly exacerbated by Biden administration’s asinine decisions.

Also economic recession in the USA absolutely impacts the rest of the world. It’s a global economy. You don’t want America to fail economically.

Turkey is an example of an - especially financially - mismanaged autocratic Asian country. What they do (outside NATO partnership) is in no way connected to Western democracies. So again, there is not and there will not be any hyperinflation that should concern us. Especially the United States got through this latest inflation better than most countries, with the current rate at 2,5%!

Yes the current rate is 2.5% but there is embedded inflation of 9% back in 2022.

It’s like some saying “yeah I gained 3 kilos of fat in 2021, 5 kilos in 2022, 3 kilos again in 2023 but I have only gained 1 kilo of fat this year so I’m doing well”. Ah nobody is forgetting about 2022. My real earnings have definitely NOT caught up at all. In fact my real earnings are down 14% adjusted for inflation.

Here in Germany the incomes have been catching up for the last three to four quarters, which means the gap is closing. I have not checked the specific data for the U. S., but I have read that decreasing oil and gas prices have a strong impact on the current rate.
I am sure however, that nobody can seriously want a broad deflation.
