There are certainly circumstances beyond the scope of what state-level governments can handle. For example, the National Weather Service is necessary, because tornadoes do not know state borders. There are certainly federal programs that are helpful. I believe the general idea is that we don't want to rely on the feds for most all of our needs. Some things can be better suited for state/local governments.

We especially do not want federal authorities and officials to interfere with individual state affairs, especially when these matters are not given to the feds via the constitution. For example, if an individual state wants to bar trannies from using a different bathroom or protect religious institutions from being forced to wed gay couples, the state should be able to do so. If a state wants to ban abortion, that should be a state's right.
