If augmented reality, metaverse, and industrial ai becomes mainstream in the 2030s/40s, do you see a big generational tech gap?

Due to how fast AI is advancing and augmented reality is slowly getting cheaper as the years go by, can you imagine a generational technology gap between older and younger generations in the 2030s or 2040s? Like younger generations preferring to be in the metaverse and using AR glasses while old people will use smartphones and the internet. And younger generations trust AI, while older generations have a stigma against it. What do you think?

To some degree this is always true. But contrary to what a lot of people believe, it's mostly the older people who drive tech in the first place. You hear a lot of stories about young people making it big in tech. But you hear about it because a twenty something making it big makes a good news story, and a middle aged man doing the same thing is boring.

I've worked in a lot of tech companies, including some startups. Most of those companies won't touch someone fresh out of college. They want people with at least 15-20-30 years of experience who know what the hell they are doing.

Older people don't always embrace new tech because the old way works just fine and sometimes better. Some people (of any age) will embrace and buy new tech, just because it's the newest. Companies count on that - with those first people paying the high price to keep tech companies going before the price drops and it becomes a commodity.

The thing about tech though, we are well into the diminishing returns side of it. Tech companies are struggling hard to come up with reasons for people to buy their latest product. This is one reason why so much software, and even some hardware, is in the cloud now. Companies could no longer get by adding new features, when extremely few people needed the features that already existed. The only way to keep their revenue stream is to "rent" tech, forcing people to continue paying.

yes there are those with education and skills and those without. big gaps possible. but maybe if done right, AI will contribute $ to humanity so many less skilled can survive.

Possible but it's largely dependent how practical AR glasses are. Smartphones are so successful because they combine a person's phone, laptop, watch, calculator, timer, I-pod, tv, radio, camera, video recorder, maps you name it in a hand held device. Used to be they were trying to make phones smaller now they are bigger.

You remember how siri & alexa were going to revolutionise everything and every house would have one and you couldn't buy one because of the demand, now you couldn't give one away. Then everyone was going to have VR goggles in the home but that didn't take off. Then there was i-watches and fit bit which are barely used by anyone. I think ultimately AR glasses will be a fad rather than a permanent thing.

Is that not happening now? With folks using older smartphones with basic apps while younger folks are finding every new thing to download?

I can't imagine wanting to live in virtual reality over real reality.
