This is a quote from this 1940s educational film talking about fascism and how it gains power. I think this video should be required viewing for everyone in schools. The main strategy of the fascist is to 'divide and conquer' and one of the most common ways to do it is to play up peoples prejudices about one another. You could all be Americans, Germans, British, but a fascist might come along and say 'no only YOU are the true American, the others don't belong here, they need to be kicked out!'

Anyways this line in particular stuck out at me. Do you think its true we aren't born with prejudices? they are made for us by those who want something? like power?

Oh of course. Without a doubt.

I’ll just reference a classic movie musical (original version): West Side Story.

It covers a glimpse of how new races of immigrants were coming to New York.

It was mostly highlighting perceived and visual tensions between a group of Hispanic Americans and a group of European Americans.

It was mostly in the eyes of the youth and they took up gangs equally and battled for “turfs.”

This was all demonstrated, and in the midst of the frustration, to themselves- the aggressors-

the European American boys were complaining about not fitting in at home or anywhere for that matter. Out on the streets was their safe haven from homes and public places. Away from adult scrutiny and family violence and division.

They were merely upset at the newcomers around their age because they believed there was not enough space and they were trying to protect something they felt they needed.

In the end they come to more of an understanding, through unfortunate loss. A modern day version of Romeo and Juliet captivated their undivided attention, and this story proves exactly why prejudices are built.

It’s built upon selfishness and the ideas that there’s not enough of something and fear. Lack of understanding also.

It’s mostly spread from adults to the children. Even if indirectly. If parents pushed their kids around and pushed them out of places, it becomes no surprise as to why those individuals would try to establish hierarchy ties of safety and also push others out, or push them around.

It worked out well in the end overall, as some would know. New York became very diverse for many cultures and ethnicities and color tones. Etc etc.

Jewish American. German American. African American. Italian American. Puerto Rican American. Irish American. Scottish American. Asian American. On and on. New York remains a flourishing mixture of a metropolis. A utopia.

Great telling and enlightening film on prejudice and it impacted and changed my life forever. Especially for me being a mixture of- Hispanic/European/American.

Regardless of being a direct product of the combination (s) or not- there should be no sides when it comes to world peace amongst the cultures there of it.

Preduces aren't made, they're inherited when we're young and unthinking. We teach kids to honour their parents, to obay them without question, we never teach them their parents are idiots. We grow up ignoring teachers, experts, even the greatest minds of our time, but we buy whatever bullshit our parents feed us. Notice in no western fairy tale is there an evil mother, only evil stepmother.
We're not born with preduces but they're quickly installed to protect us in the same way we're taught to cross the street.

I think prejudices are an  instinctive, social and psychological response  to anyone not conforming to the group, including ourselves. I expect all of us, as toddlers have to sort the world, and people, using prejudices, imaginary friends and foes. But some of us heard a different story, in our upbringing, or in our surroundings, in our experience. Some of us have been taught what are these prejudices and where they come from, within. Some of us. Put a single white kid in a classroom full of black toddlers. White kid will want to be black , in order to feel integrated, accepted, belonging. It's ingrained right from the start, overcoming this instinct is only possible under the right psycho-sociological conditions.

The way I see it, we all have prejudice in us. It’s easy to make a quick judgement like judging a book by its cover. The truth is looks only go so far.

Agree. Have you noticed how little kids are all accepting? They don’t hate on people for their gender, race or ability. It’s not until they’re older and they’ve been taught by those around them that they should bully or hate on those who are different than them.

I agree, those prejudices were usually created by religion and politics.
