What do you think about Universities Cancelling Classes After Trump Winning 2024 Election?

If you have not heard by now, after the re-election of Donald Trump and his pick for VP JD Vance winning, some universities across America have been cancelling classes and having grief counselors on campus trying to help and assist the students that are devastated in Trump and Vance win. According to a lot of news sites and interviews, universities as well as the universities professors are "wanting to help their students through this tough time" and are "taking their students feelings into consideration". At some universities, teachers not only cancelled classes, but some are even considering giving their students a free A just to make "them feel better and to feel safe". The universities are offering a safe space for the students. They are also providing students not only milk and cookies, but they are also offering them rooms where they can play Legos and color/"doodle with crayons", so they can feel better and grieve since Trump and Vance won the 2024 election. Exams are either cancelled and postpone, and students are allowed to take as much needed time off so they can grieve for as long as they need too. Universities are doing all they can to make sure that their students are in a safe and secure environment cause according to them, "their feelings matter during this time and the students need time to grieve". Universities are also allowing arts and craft stations/rooms for their students. As mentioned above grief counselors have been at the universities helping the students that are devastated at Trump and Vance win. The universities have also provided support animals to help the distraught students cope as well through therapy animals, and the students are also given hot chocolate and calming hot apple cider to help make them feel better and safe. And students are now required multiple mental health days due to the election.

Shall we just talk about how problematic that is? Universities are meant to be the heart of academic debates and polite disagreement. Your supposed to encounter every possible idea, open for criticism and then be equipped to deal with it accordingly. These students are still infantilized, being shielded and allowed to throw a tantrum because something they disagree with happened. If adults behave like children that's bad for society and by the time you reach the competency a university is supposed to require you should be out of that phase and otherwise rapidly grow out of it.

So no they should not be doing this, they should learn that shit happens and then you continue with your life. When I had a breakup I still showed up for work, during the pandemic when shit was tough for me I wasn't throwing a tantrum. When I see movements win I disagree with or my own democracy hijacked I don't cry either, I can handle those things. And to me to function in society that's a basic skill. Obviously you can be sad, but at some point you gotta man up and just do your job.

Okay so, first item on the list is the ‘milk & chookies’ and ‘LEGOs’ aspect of the University coping mechanism for stress. In the article based on the, “At Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy, a 'Self-Care Suite' for students offered students the chance to play with Legos, doodle with crayons, and munch on milk and cookies 'in recognition of these stressful times, The Free Press reported.” It seems that these stress free zones where you can just block out whatever is troubling you and just relax / meditate / focus on the nice stress free moment was in place well before the 2024 Election. If I were to guess, it was probably for those struggling with mental health or those with learning disabilities or some other issue though decided to open it to the rest of the school to deal with the uncertain times which I think is good on paper since it shows these rooms really help. My school had a similar room though not with milk & cookies, though potato chips also no LEGOs though the schools are ran independently from one another so they can do their own thing which is totally fine. It sounds weird though it does help with managing stress.

Second item on the list, giving students a day off due to an election outcome… “Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, which is Donald Trump's alma mater - told students they could take the day off.” This is totally fine since these students were told for months “Project 2025” from the Democratic Party to Trump’s own words on “Enemy Within” & “Vermin” & “Scum” & “These are not human”. So I get that a day off to relax and talk to family / friends about the election stress is 100% okay and I commend them for it.

Note: Yeah sounds weird on paper, though you know what else is weird? A 34 count guilty felon finding his way to The White House. These are unprecedented times and you are entitled to your feelings. Just relax and step away from politics for a while then come back once you are mentally stable. Thank you! God Bless You! I’m just gonna go out on a limb here and say they haven’t done that before and they won’t do it again. So they must’ve done it this time because it was pretty darn serious.

If you personally can’t recognize and realize there is no fault or error in these materials or any of these practices, especially in healthy and acknowledged moderation;

So, on the one hand, I can kind of understand it. Students were told that Donald Trump's Presidency represented an existential threat to America, "a threat to our democracy". A second term would be the end of womens' rights, LGBTQ+ rights--basically everyone who isn't a WASP or WASP-adjacent would be relegated to second-class citizen status. From the outside looking in, none of this stuff is true, but if you're deep in the midst of a hivemind, this historical moment really does seem like the sky is falling.

On the other hand, however, this is Harvard University we're talking about: an Ivy League school. "The best of the best", or so I'm told. It is hyper-competitive and the graduates of this institution are typically future heads of state, high-profile business professions or other elite positions, at the very apex of society. These students are supposed to be the 1%... and you're telling me that Kamala failing to secure the Presidency--not their studies, not their collegiate activities, not even their ultra-demanding schedules--is their breaking point? Are you kidding me? How fragile are these ivy-league students, if this was the impetus for their mental breakdown?

Universities know better than anyone just how many people discover and get comfortable with their queer identities in their youth. There is a real and highly likely probability that these queer students don’t feel safe under a president whose supporters are vehemently anti-queer, or anti-“woke” and know these same supporters will feel vindicated and emboldened to commit to some very heinous acts against queer people just because they’re queer. You can call this ridiculous if you like, but queer suicides have been on the rise following Trump’s win. The university is just doing its part to make sure their kids don’t kill themselves on campus and keep going to classes and finishing their education.


And honestly? The crayons and milk and cookies thing is pretty normal for universities during exam season. I remember my exam season, they brought in puppies from a local shelter for the students to play with, along with coloring books and play-doh. It was just to take a break and make sure we weren’t putting too much pressure on ourselves over a sheet of paper with a bunch of questions printed on it. That’s not anything to shame the universities for, especially considering these students are mostly teenagers and haven’t really experienced life outside of school. Hell, I don’t even think most of them are comfortable being legal adults, let alone refer to themselves as much. Just let the colleges look after their students and make sure they’re not dying. Lots of awful shit happens on college campuses anyway, there’s nothing wrong with making space to make sure the kids are okay.

I am at college and this is exactly what they've done. It's insane. What passes me off and I can't say it to anyone here lest it affects my grades is that we are paying for all of this. We took out loans to pay for college and the college proffessors wants to blow off college because he or she feels bad or some students can't deal with reality. I've noticed that President Trump stopped talking about is alma mater. He graduated from and Ivy League university, the number one rated business school in the world. It so happens that one of my degrees is precisely the same one that he has in the same subject matter from the same University. While I don't believe the business school itself subscribes to the far left ideology of the leadership of the University, I can understand his repulsion and reluctance to even talk about the school.

He used to mention his experience at the school with pride in virtually every speech he gave years ago. Now he mentions it only on extremely rare occasions.

It's all the Ivy League schools, but some non Ivy League like the university of Washington and the university of Oregon are also doing this. And a few users that have commented on here have said that their universities are doing something similar. Even public universities and community colleges are doing this.

And you want to know what's ironic, I live in the south and when Trump won in 2016 my classes went about as usual. My math teacher who was a die hard liberal who voted for Hillary, came to work and said, "well we had a good fight but we'll have a female president someday but until then life moves on". It's not for the students--it's for the faculty. The attitude of a university is, "you figure it out!" Basically, there are books, there's the library, there are lectures there are classes and there are office hours. You can use as many or as few of those things as you'd like. If you can pass the exams--you're golden. If not--you're not.

So "cancelling class" just means that the lazy-ass faculty members aren't doing their jobs. The students should ask for their heads to be put on pikes.

Bringing in Legos and security animals along with counselors to help with the poor upset young people that will eventually be in charge of running the country.
