The freeze is the latest in a series of federal funding attacks against the Ivy League, but Northwestern would be the first institution to face a funding cut outside of that group. University officials from Northwestern have said they have not yet received official notice of the funding freezes.

Cornell is the sixth Ivy League institution to face a federal funding freeze. The Trump administration has frozen or is reviewing grants and contracts with Brown University, Columbia University, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University. Yale University and Dartmouth College are the only two Ivies that have yet to receive a similar notice.

The New York Times first reported the funding freezes at Cornell and Northwestern.

The institutions are being probed by the Trump administration over alleged civil rights violations, including their responses to antisemitism on campus. Cornell drew scrutiny from Washington and beyond after a student in 2023 in an online forum threatened violence against Jewish people on campus and vowed to “shoot up” a dining hall that caters predominantly to Kosher diets and is next to the Cornell Jewish Center that provides student housing.

Trump is using his executive authority than GW Bush and even Reagan. It will be interesting to see how this comes out. He should differentiate what he does to not penalize valid medical research.

We should not be giving private college taxpayer money, Colleges should not have tax free status either.
