Sometimes words develop into trigger words. For example, I say "ecosystem" and people immediately think "liberal", even though an ecosystem is simply a complex network of organisms working together in balance and harmony. I say "equality", and it also immediately dumps me in Progressiveville, even though it simply means not discriminating because a student is black.

But, I would never say "I am a feminist" these days and I would definitely not put it on a dating profile. It's sad, because I owe my freedoms today to early feminists and I wish I could honor them in that way. But I can't, because like many words, it's come to stand for things that I don't agree with. It's become a catch-all term for being hateful towards those we disagree with, rather than an opportunity to have meaningful conversations. While you are correct that true feminism seeks equality between men and women, that is not the sole application of the term in practice.

A feminist would agree that women should be allowed and encouraged to become doctors. But many men would agree with that, too. However, a feminist would not agree that the standards of advanced mathematics should be lowered to accommodate more female medical students to meet an artificial equality metric in order to increase school funding. Instead, she would ask why girls are struggling in mathematics as they enter college, and pursue research to enable more students to be successful in mathematics, both male and female. She would question why mathematics are taught only one way, and ask if there may be more effective ways to teach it for visual and kinesthetic learners.

A feminist would also agree that both men and women should receive paid parental leave when a baby is born. I spoke with a couple from Germany once, and they were vacationing in the US, on paid parental leave, for an entire year. Talk about a system that massively supports young families and marriages. It was awesome to learn from them how it worked.

Those are just a couple of examples of what it means to agree with feminism in the traditional sense. The trouble is that feminism has washed its meaning away by including too many other, non-related "causes". It's why men hear the word feminism and ask "Wait. Didn't we clear that up 60 years ago?". Then women go off on a non-specific tirade about all men being rapists and hating women, and they lose their opportunity to make their case. It's why men think of "feminist" and envision a topless maybe woman with green hair and a partial beard.

I'd consider myself an old-school feminist in that I believe women should be able to buy property, have a job and a bank account, not be sexually harassed at work, and walk alone at night to see the stars without being in danger of being raped because a man assumed she was "asking for it" by simply being alone. But this new stuff that is associated with the term, I do not recognize. Another tell-tale sign is that feminism should be a bipartisan cause, but it's not anymore.

Feminists are NOT egalitarians, which is why they don't use that term. Women have been equal under the law since the 1970s. That doesn't mean that they are not sometimes illegally discriminated against or harmed - look at Harvey Weinstein - but also look at the fact that Harvey lost everything and is rotting in prison. Women are allowed to pursue anything that men can - including government. They still have to compete on MERIT, and that's as it should be, but there's no shortage of females in government, or big business, or small business owners, or whatever.

So, what are Feminists fighting for now? Slut walks? The ability to be a teacher while having an OF account? Free the nipple? Really important things like that?

Which goes to my point: women are already equal under the law in western countries. If women were fighting for equality, then that job is complete (in the west), and they can go home now.
