Right wing media has tried to make feminism seem unreasonable by pretty much devoting entire media empires to misrepresenting feminism. No individual mind can stand up against an organized and well-funded effort like this. What you're actually asking is, why do so many people not agree with YOU on what YOU say feminism is. Feminists themselves can't even agree on what feminism is. The only thing they do agree on is falsely claiming feminism is about equality. Like any other movement, feminism must be judged on its actions, not what it claims to be about. Feminism is as feminism does, the end.

Let's look at Hitler and the Nazi party for a moment. The Nazi party was the "party of the people" with the goal of making Germany strong and respected in the world. Sounds good, right? Well we all know how that went. My point is that what a movement says it's goals are is not necessarily what it's actions show to be the reality. And that is certainly true of feminism.

Feminists need to stop hiding behind "equality" and start actually walking the walk they are talking.

@ManInChains Agree. The only time feminism was about equality was way back when any advances in women's rights moved them closer to being on a level playing field with men. That has not been the case for many years, yet they still hide behind the word "equality" while literally doing nothing in the interest of half of the population. Today's feminism has been trying harder to drag men down more than trying to boost women up. That is not equality, it's divisiveness and toxicity. At no time in the history of the ideology has any prominent feminist or feminist organization fought for women to have the same responsibilities and sacrifices as men. At no time has any prominent feminist or feminist organization fought for men to have the same rights and privileges as women.
Therefore, as MIC wrote, feminism has only ever been about empowering women. You can argue that they only recently added ‘at any and all costs’ to that truth, but only a fool could look at what feminism has stood for even from the very beginning and suggest that it even remotely resembles “equality”.

Feminism is all over the map now. That was not the case in the past. So no, feminism is not what it used to be. And yes, there is a lot of sexism and hate among SOME feminists. The dictionary definitions of feminism makes it abundantly clear that it is women's rights.

Even when a particular definition says that it aims to be equal to men, it establishes the "us vs them" mentality as it implies some nebulous power that men have that will always be greater than women's no matter what is done about it because feminism either doesn't bother to check where women are in their side of the equals sign or they give brain-dead advice if they do notice that men need help too.

Making the acknowledgment that men might not have it so great contradicts the entire notion of patriarchy, but don't ask questions because that makes you a misogynist.

Because there are many competing definitions and visions for what "feminism" means, with very different implications across the board.

This is what I'd say as well. There's too many versions of it and so much in-fighting. Some are anti-trans, some are not. Some are sympathetic towards men's issues, some are actively hostile. Some believe in the patriarchy, some believe capitalism is the issue.

I will not sit here and call feminism useless, it definitely serves a purpose. Women's issues need to be addressed because their issues are valid. Men's issues need to be addressed because they're also valid.

Personally I'd more likely call myself an egalitarian and that both men and women need their issues answered in some form or fashion, it's just really hard for society to make those steps without stepping on some fingers somehow.

All that matters to me is that everyone gets their voice heard, that gender doesn't make you good or bad-- but it does shape how your life plays out in a society that seems really obsessed with it. So, there is no definitive version of feminism in my book, it has become somewhat subjective these days. Some issues are definitely worth addressing (like reproductive rights) while others are simply pedantic (like man spreading).

It's okay to listen to women's issues, it's okay to listen to men's issues. I just think everyone needs to be heard because if half of society feels ignored that's going to breed a hell of a lot of resentment.
