Since they are part of the South American continent, do people in places like Columbia and Brazil ever refer to themselves as "American"?

I am just wondering if they ever call themselves American or is it just people from the United States of America.

There are a few different ways to count continents.
Among those differences it's counting America as one continent or counting North America or South America as different continents.

Anyhow.
Colombia and Brazil (and more) are part of America/South America.

So Colombians and Brazils are Americans just like someone from Spain or Germany are Europeans.

USA - United States of America is the country many think of when they say "America".
But USA is the country name, not just America.
Obviously named by people who have no imagination.

- Let's just call it that then...

There should be another word then "American" if talking about people specificly from USA.
Like USAians for example.

People from Columbia and Brazil are Americans, they are just not Usaians.

In that case people from USA wouldn't be Americans, they would be North Americans, if you must distinguish between North and South.

I'm from Culombia and I usually say that I'm Culombian, I only continue saying that I'm American if someone from another continent asks me.

Yeah, they do. In Spanish speaking countries America means the whole continent and the US is referred to as Norteamerica or Estados Unidos (United States). Some of them call US citizens "americanos" but they would all consider themselves as americanos too if talking about the continent as a whole. I guess it's still more common for them to refer to themselves as South American though

Also, Brazil isn't a Spanish speaking country but I think it's the same for them too
