A 14-year old girl tried to pay for her lunch at school with a real $2 bill. She was arrested for using counterfeit money.

Trivia: Two-dollar bills were not used very much because the original cash drawers in stores didn't have a place for them, they only had places for $1, $5, $10 and $20 dollar bills.

I can understand a cashier being ignorant. But didn't they have a supervisor or some school official who is old enough to know better?
What kind of Nazis would call the cops?
And it a testament to the incompetence of police if they actually arrested the kid.

The parents should sue the school and city.

In 1862, the Federal Government began printing the very first paper bills which included the two-dollar bill. The Federal Reserve stopped printing $2 bills in 1966. But in 1976, on the U. S. bicentennial, they brought back the $2 bill with a new, beautiful image. Thomas Jefferson is on the denomination.
Those $2 bills are still in circulation and are occasionally printed.

I have a few crisp $2 bills stashed away as keepsakes.
I stopped by the Bureau of Printing and Engraving on a vacation to Washington DC in 1985 and bought an uncut sheet of $2 bills as a souvenir.

At each printing, a lot of them suddenly went into circulation. Many people got as many as they could as a bit of a novelty. Later, as the novelty disappeared, they were spent more often. Younger people have not seen them much. If someone at a school doubted they were real, I could understand them getting hold of someone official at the school, probably a teacher or principal, who should have recognized their value. What really amazes me is that any police official would arrest someone over a two dollar bill. If the officer was unsure, they should have held on to the bill and gotten the ID of the person who used it. Then they could have investigated and followed up if it was fake. In that case, the student who used it probably had a fake bill passed to them and did not realize it.

Wow that is crazy that someone would get arrested for that!! I have two dollar bills, and I sometimes use them. I like to leave them for tips when I eat in restaurants because it surprises the waitresses... LOL... A lot of employees who are under say, 25 or 30, have never seen them. I usually no longer pay for things at cash registers with them, because most cashiers under a certain age don't know how to handle cash anyway, let alone know what a two dollar bill is. (In my area most payments at checkstands are credit cards or digital.)

I’m not going to generalize all schools and say, “yes your honor all schools are stupid because of this one mistake”….

Though I will say that, if they couldn’t take $2 bills…. Maybe they should’ve let the kid go with a ‘warning’ instead of being arrested for trying to get lunch.

You shouldn’t be arrested for paying lunch especially as a 14 yr old girl. You should get a “sorry, we don’t take $2 bills though since it is your first time… How about you give me your $2 bill and I’ll give you 2 $1 bills so you can pay no questions asked”. That is what my school leaders would’ve done, I should know because I went to school with such high integrity role models.

Whoever led to the arrest should be fired on the spot, and whoever slapped the cuffs on that 14 yr old girl should be fired from the force. All you are stupid!

It's been years since I've seen a $2 bill. I used to always keep them when I got one. But even after doing that for decades I still don't have many. I don't even know if they still make them.

I could easily see someone thinking they are fake since they are so uncommon. I'm sure a lot of people have never seen one and don't even know they exist.

Now try to spend a Susan B Anthony dollar...

One place that used to give a lot of $2 bills and Susan B dollars as change is the post office. I think the post office was used to put them into circulation.

This doesn't make a young kid dumb.

Why would a person younger than say 35 know that? They're not really in circulation day to day. I haven't seen one handed back as change in over 10-15 years myself. Also, a 14 year old girl who prob doesn't have a wallet filled with money, and a ton of face to face cash purchases done to even see one.

Where in any school curriculum do they show or teach the history of our physical currency? Lol

Didn't this happen back in like 2016? The more ridiculous part of this story is that there were about 40 other instances nationwide of school staff going after kids for alleged counterfeit bills around the same time.
