My take on it is probably going to be pretty controversial but to say that black Americans haven't had a massive disadvantage in this country both historically and today. It's getting better and we've come farther than people think. Still the reality is the damage done to black Americans by the slave trade is part of why black people in a lot of places are struggling to get out of poverty in America they never really recovered as a people because they still faced discrimination and still do to an extent.

People go on and on about black crime, but the reality is they are misrepresenting the statistics. If you go to impoverished black neighborhoods, you find a lot of crime, but you know what? Statistically when you go to an impoverished white community the crime is about the same statistically. Crime in America is a poverty issue not a race issue and it just so happens that a lot of black people are poor because of the way they've been treated since they were freed.

I think that black Americans should recieve reperations for a lot of reasons not just these, but since the government was the one that permitted and endorsed slavery then the government should make the payments not the average people What happened to your ancestors at my ancestors' hands doesn't make me guilty for something they did. The sins of the father should not pass down to the son this was the governments fault it's theirs to fix.

Even if you look at it from and economic perspective it would be good for the economy too in the long run. By lifting more people out of poverty you encourage them to do things like start small business, invest, and buy things like luxury goods because they can afford to spend their money since they are out of poverty. Poor people don't stimulate the economy they drain on it so every person who gets their finances together helps boost our economic output.

This is why so many massive million-dollar budget video games keep flopping and people in the industry are losing money and getting laid off. Every day there's a dozen new video games and most people can only afford one game a month with how much they cost so most average games are just ignored because they cost too much especially triple A.

If people are poor, they don't spend money, if they don't spend money, they don't stimulate the economy, and when the economy doesn't have a steady flow of people buying and selling things it causes an economic down spiral. They're American citizens and they deserve a fair chance. That said I'm 100% against any and all DEI things because they've just become a legal way to discriminate and not just against white people Asians, black people, and others too. There are people who are bi-Racial getting rejected for a job they're qualified for because "They're not black ENOUGH." It's sick it was meant to level the playing field but all it did was make things worse.

You had an official admission by the President of the United States long ago that slavery was in fact wrong. Through the Emancipation Proclamation that was signed on January 1, 1863 to free the slaves a reversal of policy was signed into law and all states that didn't honor the new found freedom of former slaves were considered in rebellion by the United States government. A Civil War among Americans occurred and roughly 698,000 soldiers died as a result of that war. Roughly 2% of the American population was wiped out. When you consider that only 1% of southerns had large plantations with numerous slaves, you pretty much wiped out most of the people that would be responsible for an apology through warfare. Most normal people could not afford slaves, they were too expensive. Most normal people lived impoverished lives and barely survived. It's only the aristocracy and those close to them that were slavers.

To further the matter all the way back in 1816 America started sending freed slaves back to Africa that wanted to return. In 1847 the colony that was formed turned into the nation of Liberia. America not only admitted slavery was wrong, but freed slaves, and gave them their own country in Africa where they came from if they wanted to return. Many freed slaved, wished to stay in the United States of America, and they were allow to stay and enjoy their new found freedom if they choose to do that. All of these issues were settled long before you or I were born. The fact that people are still crying like little bitches about being born free in the world's greatest nation is a testament to their weakness as a people. Those that wanted their own country left and returned to Africa. Those that wanted to stay in the United States did, yet they raised a bunch of limp dick soy boys that never learn how to be a man, how to take responsibility for their own lives and educations, and to learn to integrate and live among a diversity of many people from all over the world that appreciate their freedom.

It is symbolic to apologize. For example if your child broke a window you apologize and pay for the window... you did not actually do it but you still apologize because its the right thing to do.

No. Not for slavery because slavery had existed throughout human history and did not begin with the Americas.
Besides, slavery is a distant memory and doesn't effect anyone who is alive today.

More shameful was the policy of racial segregation. Southern Democrats are mostly responsible for that.

Racial segregation was unique to the USA. It was beyond shameful. It was also responsible for embedding racism into several generations of white people.
The economic and cultural effects have not yet been healed.

However, I don't see how a formal apology would help. It would only add fuel to the fire and encourage BLM and radical left-wing activists to push for more things like restitution, DEI, 1619 project, resentment toward "whites", and hatred toward the USA.

If the government apologizes to blacks for slavery or segregation, what about Native Americans, Spanish settlers and Mexicans whose land was stolen, Hawaiians, people in the Caribbean, the Philippines and the Pacific islands, Central and South America, Africa and Asia? There is an endless list of people and places that the U. S. and other colonial powers fucked over the past 500 years. But how would a mere apology help if we continue to fuck them?

While we are at it, we could stop supporting continued imperialism and genocide in places like Palestine and Syria.

sorry no. slavery was and is a worldwide problem before the United States was formed and continues AFTER the United States has fought to abolish it. This whole thing of trying to blame "whitey" for it is just bull poop, and history has shown it. Even obama, the most racist president in our history knew this and chose not to offer an apology for the country, as even he knew that "reparations" would be wrong.

The weird freaks in the comments blaming "slavery" for why black people struggle to get rich today are delusional. "The struggle" is cultural. How many gold chains and $3,000 outfits do they really need? The desire to not achieve upward mobility, is due to a stronger desire to get free shit and stay on welfare and government aid--not because of slavery.

The fact that this is the ONLY history of slavery that bothers these people is all the proof we need that it's more about an agenda that overcoming our past. How many of the abusers are alive to apologize? How many blacks have thanked the Quaker families that helped them escape to freedom. Whites to Native Americans. When did catholicism apologize to protestants for "0pen Season" on those who they termed Heretic. Germans to Jew, Rwandans to Rwandans. The list goes on. Social change is slow and very shaky, two steps forward and one step back. I hope America does not backslide on the advancement and progess it has made. But if you have to blame anyone the you have start with the first Slave Owner in the United States, which was Anthony Johnson was an Angolan man who became a wealthy farmer and landowner in Virginia and Maryland. He won a lawsuit in 1655 that recognized his right to own an African servant for life, making him the first slave owner in America, and he was not the only Black Slave Owner in the United States (see this Page- historycollection.com/.../ ), they were often more brutal to their Slaves than the majority of White Slave Owners.
