Do they ever realize that the trashing of government is destroying them and pushing them and their rural Red States down into crippling poverty, ignorance, and disease more than anyone else.

And if they do eventually realize what they have asked for, and how it's playing out for them, can they ever admit it to themselves and to the rest of the nation?

No, I think they are literally incapable of finding blame in themselves and will only chase after the boogeyman they are told to fear. They have no critical thinking skills and vote against self interests just to "own" the enemy. When things come home to roost, they will be told to blame others and to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and lord help them, they will try and fail. This system isn't meant for everyday success stories. Only a few lucky ones who are born into the right circumstances actually make it.

Sadly, I share your opinion. Their most likely response will be to blame Obama, Hillary, Biden, 'The Libs" in general, minorities, immigrants, Jews, or Muslims.
