Have you ever lost a friend over politics?

I have recently. 28 years as a friend. And it wasn't my choice. He sent me an image of Elon on top of a tesla, and it said 0 to 1939, implying he is a nazi some how. I asked him not to send me stuff like that because I don't agree with it. Nothing more.. My exact words were "please don't send me things like that, I don't agree with it and I strongly dislike politics in general" next thing I know, no warning, I'm blocked.

Lots, but only in the last ten years.

When my wife and I first moved to this rural area in 2002 we didn't know anyone. She found out that a couple she knew lived in the nearby town.

We got together with them and said were wondering how we would get to know people in the area. They said "You should come to our church tomorrow."

I recoiled at the thought. But they said it was a nondenominational congregation with people of all religious backgrounds, including atheists and even pagans.
So we went and it was wonderful.

I met some of the brightest, most informed, and friendliest people of my life and became best friends with quite a few. We went to each other's homes, did things together, went on outings and vacations, played music, held fun events, celebrated birthdays and holidays together.

Through them, I got involved in the wider community, became fairly well known, and developed a large Facebook following.

Almost all of the people were liberal because I was, too. This was before liberalism went insane.

Some Facebook "friends" posted gun control" bullshit any time there was a shooting in news. I strongly support 2nd amendment rights and some people "unfriended" me. Good. Fuck them.

In the 2016 election, I voiced negative opinions about Hillary and some people in the congregation decide that I was a MAGA conservative and started talking behind my back. These were all loyal Democrats.

Then, in 2020, they all lost their shit over covid. They started doing virtual services and meetings. They were endorsing masking and lock downs.

My wife and I still met with a few close friends from time to time. But when we refused get the experimental, gene-modifying, mRNA jabs, everybody decided that we were anti-vaxer, grandma killing, Trump lovers. People who had been our best friends for almost 20 years cut us off.
We found out what kind of friends they were.

But at the same time, we met new friends who were unmasked, un-vaxed and unafraid. Some of them are progressive, some are conservative.
We now have more friends than ever and they are better quality.

It's funny how times change.

Dude i grew up liberal. I still consider my self at least a classical liberal... But wtf is wrong with them now... According to the left i am far right, according to the right, im center left.. im fucking confused lol

Actually, no, but I remember when I was in middle school, and I convinced my best friend to vote for the party I supported. I laugh when I think about it. How childish I was! But now, I definitely don't make friends with anyone who has an opposing view because I think I could never tolerate their ignorant statements.

I've cut off family over politics. I can't side with a group actively trying to legislate against my marriage just so they can save a few bucks (and that's not happening either for them). Thankfully my close friends would never vote for nazi sympathizers so I don't have to worry about them.

Not yet but I have a friend and colleague that I had to agree with to NOT discuss politics. So far so good.
