Anonymous(30-35)+1 yMaybe one recently, I suspect. But that one is kind of a weird situation.
It hasn't been a thing I struggle with significantly, no. Politics have been extremely important to me since I was very young, like very early teens. Because I focused so significantly on understanding history and figuring out my own philosophy on how others should be treated in the world and my own concept of morality and justice, I've specifically chosen friends who have compatible values and views. There have been associates along the way who had different views when I was in high school and a few stragglers here and there, but overwhelmingly, I choose friends who have shared values. I don't really have an interest in being friends with many or almost any conservatives. I currently have one associate who is republican but not a trump supporter. I kind of doubt we will be serious friends. Like many conservatives, she kind of avoids the heavy, controversial things, which are my bread and butter. I dont love to only talk about light hearted things and relationships. It's fun but I dont think a connection like that holds enough depth for me to consider you to be on the same level as my closest friends, who are all more or less politically aligned with me and get in deep into the weeds of difficult topics often. We'll see. But I generally don't make allowance for anyone conservative in my close circle of friends. She would be the exception if we do get there. Doubt it though- she avoids any serious conversation that isn't about relationships and doesn't love to disagree and we disagree on a lot. she's also catholic and im an atheist. I talk about religion a lot more because my family is deeply religious and so are some of my friends. Ill bring up discussions but she just doesn't like to get into it. We've been talking less and less. I dont know if it will last but its fun chatting to her sometimes, for now.00 Reply

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yUp until recently I kept my mouth shut about most politics because I dont even like to hear about them myself. I have my views, which differ from most and I generally dont like broadcasting those views. To me it's almost like religion. Like, I respect that you believe in this but dont shove it in my face. Same thing with politics. It wasn't until I saw people all over my Instagram and Facebook talking about how great Joe Biden was, or how this stay at home order is stripping us of our freedom, or anything along those lines that I finally stepped in and said something. First thing, Joe Biden is a creepy baby toucher and no one will change my mind. Him kissing children's necks, covering their mouths while whispering in their ear, rubbing little girls chests right above where there breasts would be, holding on to children and young women who pull away from him and refusing to let them go... he's a fucking predator. Maybe he has never touched a child but he wants to and that is obvious in all the evidence. The fact that people want that for our president, after literally shitting all over Trump for talking sexually about women (who were all of age, I want to point out) is ridiculous. Like yes, let's hate on trump for making comments about women but invite in a pedophile with open arms. Makes a lot of fucking sense. Anyone who votes for him is down right ignorant and condoning a pedophile.

Opinion Owner+1 yShit, got off topic. Yeah, due to the above statement I lost a few friends. Once I stated my piece on Joe Biden and told them that this stay at home order truly isn't stripping them of their freedom, they got offended and blocked me. People I have known for years; all because I dont share the same views. But, I mean, last I checked I have never been a follower and I won't start today just to save a friendship that would have failed in the long run anyways. Lost people over the Hillary and Trump election too. Hillary is a crazy bitch and Trump is an idiot.
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI haven't yet, but one of my friends does her best to lose her everyone around her. Politics is a plague that I don't ever talk about with anyone. I always try to avoid this topic. Especially now during coronavirus. In my country, people very often get into arguments about politics these days. We can't talk about it, especially with some "blind" people who are able to bite your head off to defend their favourite political party (like the friend of mine I mentioned).
We got a new government during the first weeks of the "corona crisis". Everyone wanted to finally get the previous government away, and now that everyone sees what the new government does to the people, they want the previous one back. So the supporters of the previous gov are blaming the "blind" supporters of the new gov. for giving the country in the hands of a man who acts like he wants the best for the people just can't seem to find the best ways of doing it. Politics are now kind of tearing apart the people. Aah. It's horrible.
They say Slovakia is amongst countries that are handling corona the best way because of a very low death rate. But those are just numbers. People are getting very furious about some gov's actions. But I just sit back, relax and try to clear my mind of everything connected with politics.00 Reply
+1 yNot yet, though its about to get there. I have some family and some friends who are extremely unreasonable and incapable of even grasping the thought that some one could think differently then them. I do disagree with them, but I try to avoid talking about it and when I do I keep it as low key as possible because I know that they would blow up. I find it infuriating because I think people should be able to discuss ideas without being aggressively attacked for it but some people just are not capable of it (and I find I'm getting increasingly tired of keeping a peace that they don't seem to want so I'm starting to slip up).

No. I have drastically different views on most things my friends believe. I am more conservative while the majority, if not all of them, are more liberal. We don't get into arguments about, I always explain the reasons for why I believe certain things and they respect that luckily. I also respect that everyone has a right to believe what they want to believe and you also can't actually control what you believe. You can be open-minded, but at the end of the day you believe what you believe. I always try to understand their viewpoints, even if it doesn't change mine.
We're human beings and we're never all going to agree on the same things. Its highly unlikely you will ever meet a friend that you 100% share the exact same opinions on everything with. If you only limit being friends with people with your beliefs (and that goes beyond politics and religion- people have varying beliefs on child-raising, marriage, dating or taste in films, books, etc) you won't have many, if any friends.
I've met people before who 'want nothing to do with' people of different political or religious beliefs. That's understandable if that person is always trying to pick fights with you or generally a horrible person, but excluding association of anyone just because of some of their politics or religion is downright immature. You wouldn't be allowed to say that about race or nationality, and I think people can't help their beliefs (as long as they are educated on them).10 Reply- 2.2K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic.
+1 yI think I might have indirectly - I posted my ideas about Trump on facebook and a guy harassed me for 8 hours about how my views were wrong and tried to embarrass me and humiliate me for disagreeing with him - and I told two guys I thought he deserved to go the burning lake of fire for blaspheming God's name by acting like somebody who stands up for human rights is devilish - I believe both guys indirectly or directly rejected my friendship for being so severe in the way I condemned the guy who harassed me online - I also socially excluded people by bad mouthing them and saying they were not real believers in God because they supported evil politicians and some of they were professional clergy or pastors at church who had worked in the church for a decade or more

+1 yFriends no, but my hardcore leftist uncle disowned me. Him and his family are the black sheep of an otherwise traditionally conservative family so we've never been close with them. We were reconnecting for a while and I talked to my uncle about life and he wanted to give me a ride on his Harley and whatnot. However, upon realizing my political commitment to the conservative party, the Christian Democrats, he unfriended me on Facebook and cut all communication. He's one those real, "capitalist swine" types, even though he's somewhat of a materialist as well so I don't think he fully knows what he stands for. As a student of political science I do, not that he'd listen. That political temperament are experts at only listening to themselves.
In the end he's only proven that water is thicker than blood for leftists.10 ReplyI have, mostly because I unfriended them. I was like 14/15 when I had a Boomer-‘Servative phase and unfriended people just for posting Blue Nation Review and Occupy Democrats stuff. Then after a friend introduced me to Libertarianism, I dove straight into that. Nowadays I have more of a “Live and let live” and “eh, people are gonna do whatever their gonna do and I’m in no position to tell them otherwise” kind of attitude. Nowadays I’m friends with people who range from being hardcore Orthodox Christian Palestinians who are big into Tradition and have disdain for Jews, laid back Catholic Conservatives, laid back hippies, Atheist Monarchy-boos, Wehraboos, Rhodie-boos, Provoboos, Anarchists, etc.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yYou can be the most average, normal, passive, middle-of-the-road conservative in the world, and in this day and age, even people who have known you for decades will look at you and, upon hearing you're a conservative, will see that as a confession to a deep, burning desire to lynch blacks, throw gays from buildings, to see the middle east turned to glass, and to rebuild the world in Hitler's image.
Because all sanity is gone, and people aren't allowed to have different views anymore. Reality has boiled down to people treating it as if there are two choices, and no grey area whatsoever: morally correct, or nazi.
So, yeah. I've lost people. I've lost almost everyone. All because I (spooky voice) LISTEN TO BEN SHAPIRO!!!

10 ReplyI lost two of my oldest friends because of political views. around 2016 they started talking about Trump and just keep parroting some artic headline that I know was either fake or very misleading because I actually read the thing and well I kept quiet for two years because it wasn't that often. But it got worst and finial I started debunking the stuff they were saying and cameout as a trump supporter and they called me a nazi and blocked me.

+1 yNo, I haven’t. And, I am very strongly opinionated, politically. I think, as long as you can articulate your views respectfully, it really shouldn’t be an issue. I don’t think you should be all too afraid of losing friends over your political views. I haven’t heard of that happening to anyone, and, in my opinion, anyone who would drop a friend over their political views is a shit person anyway.

+1 yI've seen a lot of them invite the situation on themselves. And then, I just state a few facts... and they start breaking out in hives, and resorting to threats, insults, and mass hysteria.
For example: one girl asking for feedback about that one dude in a dress at an awards show. And I merely said: "I'm gonna go with Deuternomy 22:5 on this one." She lost her everloving mind.00 Reply- 354 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic.
+1 yI pretty much keep mine to myself as well. I personally haven't lost friends over it, but I have two friends who got into a huge blowup and have hated each other since over it. One of them was always trying to shove his views down everyone's throats, including mine, and the other one started doing it back to him, and then they got into a huge fight over it and blocked each other on social media.
00 Reply Politics over the last 8 years has brought out the very worst in people in the US. As a result, I too decline the opportunity to voice my political views with people who may have opposing views. Because these days, a lot of people don't have political discussions with the intent on finding common ground, they debate simply to win. Thus, it isn't worth discussing politics with people you like but don't aren't sure could have the conversation maturely.

+1 yNo I try to keep my disagreements with my friends civil. A lot of my friends are Conservative leaning and some even support Trump, while I'm a person who's moderately Liberal and typically in opposition to Trump but we don't let it get in the way of our friendships. As long as they're not Nazis or Communists supporting NK, PRC, or Stalin then I can make do with a disagreement.

The best politcs are discussions where you can agree and respect on differing opinions based on policies - not cognitive dissonance and mascotting.
