Trump: "We're gonna be selling a gold card. You have a green card, this is a gold card. We're gonna put a price on that card of about $5 million and that's going to give you green card privileges, plus. It's gonna be a route to citizenship, and wealthy people will be coming into our country."

It's pretty common among many nations. Generally there are conditions where you have to deposit a certain amount of money in a local bank, buy a home to establish residency (generally there is some large tax that goes to the government involved), and invest in a business to employ local people of a particular country. If you ever took the time to explore moving to another country you would see this all over the world. When I looked around at countries that did not charge a property tax, this was pretty much a guaranteed fast path to citizenship in those countries. You could get citizenship within a year or less if you met the conditions. So it's not out of the ordinary. That said, Congress controls immigration law in the USA, so I would say it's up to them to draft a bill that allows it.

I'm not against wealthy people that will invest in the American economy immigrating to the USA legally so long as they aren't some major criminal/terrorist. That's what America wants to do, attract wealth, intelligence, and talent to America to grow our economy and reserve of talented and intelligent individuals.
5.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. It's pretty common globally. It's not that blainted but not able to work for a year, with a sponsor. You do got to be rich to sustain a living with no income. So it was pay to win already.
Australia was that openly bribing millionaire for the modern era. Show some bank statements and fast pass some permeate residence.

1 ySerious question: Why would anyone with $5 million dollars want to be a US citizen? What benefits does it have?
I'm not even going to address the illegality of it, but really, why would you want to at this point?

You have a point, albeit one that would never occur to me.

That is a feature of living here in the US - one is compelled to concoct seemingly unlikely scenarios like this in order to grasp and express what actually turns out to be the truth, sadly, It has always been sort of like this. Remember - the country was founded by criminals who then committed genocide. The results now speak for themselves.

@loveslongnails I think it would make an excellent conversational icebreaker at a party... You know if you were really needing a good opening line...
- 1 y
@Caroline91 I think the answer will soon be "because it's a tax haven for the wealthy"
- 1 y
Cause you can buy anything you want... at Alice's restaurant... Walk right in, it's around the back. Just a half a mile from the railroad track... Where Trump is jumpin', doin' his shake downs... Send in the Clowns!
- 1 y
@Caroline91 So, your epiphany somehow involves song lyrics? LOL I see.
- 1 y
@loveslongnails. Can't think of any reason for it not to... I desperately need a good comic relief scene rn... You should see the visions in my head accompanying those lyrics. AND I got a little soft shoe goin' on irl, too.

@loveslongnails. Love George Carlin. He too often hit the nail right on the head. I wonder what he would have to say about all of this now?

1 yHonestly I hope trump gets a lot of public outrage from this he is sitting president and all he cares about is his money like im sorry but people in other countries are starving and you wanna charge them 5 mil that they dont have muchless can afford to spend time saveing up for please get a life
00 Reply2.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. 'tis America I guess. And everything comes down to money. And those are the terms through which Mr President understands everything I guess, too.
But yes, I know about those schemes. Kind of sad in a way. People from abroad can buy themselves in, and buy property, increasing prices. While there's people born here who freeze in the streets.

1 yyeap. how are they doing all this without congress... I thought we had a balance of power. oh well... just need a king I guess.
Selling to the highest dollar. The value I see here is filling up the treasury. The idea is to get us out of debt, so it's good to some degree. Fair... can still have a lottery for all others.
at least someone cares about the treasury... I'll put a clothes pin on my nose with this one...
13 ReplyA lot of countries have citizenship by investment programs like that. In Denmark, Cayman Islands, Finland etc. Of course there is naturalization which is slower, so they offer the citizenship by investment for the fast track to citizenship. It is very common I do not see the big deal every other country does this. Denmark's golden visa its the same thing.
- 1 y
@VyacheslavSokolov cool! the flaw is... should be to the highest bidder. fixed price... that's lame. Or better yet, it costs $5 million or 2% of assets, whichever is greater! cmon Trump...
@lightbulb27 It's usually for business owners with money. If you put $400k in a bank account in Turkey they will send you a Citizenship if you leave it in their for 3-6 months I think. You have to put money into the country to the fast track the Citizenship, so you do not have to learn the language or take a test like everyone.
Fast track is usually for people who want to do business in the country it is not for like a regular person looking for work. Citizenship by investment is normal, so I don't get why people are getting upset over it. It is for people who want to invest in your country and bring jobs and business to it.

1 yI think it is dumb to call it a, “gold card”.
Also I worry about the amount Trump is going to pocket for himself, overall not a bad idea. I’ve seen worse in this term & his first.
24 Reply- 1 y
@MisterWack But just think... if he pockets enough, this world might no longer be big enough and gold enough for his tastes and, perhaps... just perhaps... he will board one of Elon's rocket ships heading for mars to see how much he can plunder there. Hope lives on!
- 1 y
@Caroline91 Nah, have Trump board Blue Origin’s Rocket to a Black Hole since he always felt sad about his ‘small hands’ never being good enough.
- 1 y
@MisterWack Small hands on deck! The Black Hole Express is running on schedule!!

@Caroline91 🤣🤣🤣
Anonymous(18-24)1 yWas always the case. Makes sense. Most countries do this. For instance if you are a wealthy foreigner like Musk who brings money and jobs into America and provides services to the us government then why shouldn't you have citizenship vs some ilegal immigrant who clogs up the services, takes us jobs, committs crimes etc.
10 Reply12.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. You could always buy citizenship in nearly every country - even the USA.
Trump has just made it a money making scam, is all.
20 Reply12K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Sounds like a good idea. it solves most of the real of illegal immigration. They do something like that in Malaysia. Kind of a dowry, A few bad actors may sneak through, though. From China or rich Muslim countries.
10 Reply4.3K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. You can buy many citizenship it's not uncommon

I guess some wealthy foreign person who believes the "Land of Opportunity" bullshit. I feel sorry for people who come here expecting freedom or economic opportunity or much of anything good, especially if they are not white. Black and brown people and to some extent, yellow people get treated like trash by the whites here.
26.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I suppose that is one way to get immigrants that are not uneducated, indigent and impoverished and lifetime welfare recipients.

Anonymous(25-29)1 yI do not like trump, but the guy is really smart. I think it is good practice to attract rich people to your country. The rich are more civilized, cultured, and elite than the poor. Instead of being proud of it, you criticize it. 🙄
