It can be. I know a guy who had to go to HR Sexual Harassment training after complimenting a younger woman on the dress she was wearing in the office. She complained to HR for him saying, "You look nice in that dress", an innocent compliment.

You see, when you practice empathy without limitations like you’re taught to from a healthy childhood standpoint, seeing people be openly hateful is harmful and painful to witness. Especially when those reasons are very obviously petty/projection and making a joke about it in the hopes of getting people to laugh with you so that you form a connection rather than being a bad person does not, in fact, make you less of a hateful person.
