A Japanese bus driver with 29 years of service lost his retirement package worth $84,000 after being fired for stealing $7 from passengers' fares.

Kyoto City sacked the man, who was not named, after he was filmed by the security camera of his bus pilfering 1,000 yen ($7) in 2022.

After he was denied his retirement money of more than 12 million yen ($84,000), the driver sued the city but lost the case.

The verdict was overturned in his favor, with a court ruling that the punishment was excessive.

But on Thursday the Supreme Court delivered a final ruling in the city's favor, reinstating the original penalty.

Japan is known for quite drastic sentencing, but this is truly over the top. Next announcement might be "former bus driver found hanging from a tree after running out of money". We had a slightly comparable case here, where a supermarket worker was terminated without notice after cashing in two unused deposit coupons. The labor court forced the company to hire her back or to pay compensation.

It's hard but fair. I guess 150 years back his life were over because there was just one sentence.
I guess in Somalia when you're a driver and you don't steel from passengers' fare, you're considered as loser and fool, your family hates you, your friends despise you and police will beat you.

Nevertheless everyone would prefer to live in Kyoto instead of Mogadishu.

I think that was an excessive punishment. But knowing of Japan's past, they don't care about the normal citizen, just the Emperor and the military. Who else tells their people to fight to the very last man or don't come back?

The key issue was that they believe that the Japanese people need to feel confident in those running the bus service and he was destroying that so he must be fully punished.

In the US we have no confidence in the Post Office and local, City governments plus Federal government because a hard line has not been drawn and the employees fleece us like a drug store in San Fransisco.
