Can a person make a decent living, be able to live independently on SSDI? I have never heard of someone being able to do that?

Just asking this question, because i saw someone make a comment saying "You can make a decent living on SSDI."

Is that true? don't get me wrong, i am not on any type of social security income or financial assistance from the government, however i am employed, but not living on my own, but with roommates, but i know of some people who are unemployed and they still live with their parents, but they tell me they are worried they will end up homeless the day their parents eventually pass away.

Do you know of anyone who has been able to make a decent living or avoid homelessness because of social security disability income or government financial assistance>

So here’s the thing with SSDI, which is specifically given out to those with disabilities. It is possible to maintain a job, HOWEVER there are incredibly strict rules regarding income. In the United States, you cannot have savings worth more than $2000 at any given time. If you do, the government will deem you unfit to receive the income because you already have so much in savings. You also can’t qualify if you’re married, even if your spouse is also on disability. So you can do it, but you also have to spend enough money to justify giving it to you on a regular basis.

It depends on your disability, the area you live in, if you have dependents or not, it’s all extremely varied

I'm on SSDI. It's hard but if you're willing to go to thrift stores and use food pantries it makes it a little better. Budgeting is a must. Try to work on not giving into impulse buys. Try to live in an area where there is public transportation. Having a car in SSDI is very hard. Especially when it comes to repairs. I have a car but seldom use it because I live in an area with good public transportation. Section 8 will make it immensely easier to save money. Do not get more than two credit cards and use them sparingly. Also expect people to look down on you for having it. People generally seem to think people like us are lazy or a drain in the system. F them they don't know our situations.

SSDI can be almost nothing, but it can be as much as $4000 a month. That is way more than someone needs to make a living. How much you get depends on how much you paid in prior to becoming disabled.

No. I’s only about a fourth of what you need these days to survive and they’ve made it clear it was never meant for anyone to survive on alone, only supplemental assuming someone else is taking care of you. If your parents pass, better hope you are close with good friends.

I think those people should stop living with their parents and get a job and a life. Then they won't have to worry about that.

My wife does home health visits and sees people on SSDI a lot. They can live but it is not a pretty sight.
