Why is it that some people twist what someone says?

I've had this happen a few times. They read something I wrote, and for some reason take something I said out of context, and then turn it against me. Ever have this happen?

Girls do that A LOT!!!
Back in the mid `80's, I was interested in a girl and wrote her kind of a love letter and, in it, I mentioned that I've only ever had one marriage proposal and that was 2 years earlier and I would've accepted except that she was only 3 years old, at the time! (Besides, I was already seeing her mother, at the time. Even if she WAS 18, I would've said, no.)
That was SUPPOSED to be a cute, funny story but this raging bitch convinced herself that I said that I WANTED to marry a 3 year old girl!! She came to my house with her brand new boyfriend (she didn't have him when I gave her the letter a day or so before!) and they both threatened to beat me up because I wanted to marry a 3 year old!! She said her dad was chief of police where she lives (about 40 miles up river) and was gonna get him on my ass for this!! Well, either she never said anything to him about it or she did and he had the common sense to read it the way I intended and told her to settle her fat as down!! He never did anything and I never saw any of them ever again!!
Said 3 year old is now in her mid-40's and has been happily married and living in New York for the past 15 or 20 years.

Because they don't like what you said but they can't prove it wrong so they create a straw man to attack instead since they can't attack your argument. People will also do this with a multi point arguments.

If you make several points people will often ignore the ones they can't debunk and hone in on a single point they think they can debunk. Then they claim they won the argument when they debunk one point (Or try and fail to most of the time) when they did fuck all.

People hear what they want to hear and say, so you have to straighten them out... sometimes more than once.

Don't assume everyone can hear or is rational at any given moment. They may be self absorbed.

Lack of intelligence or unhealed trauma. People will run information through filters to manipulate it so they can cope. If something gets in the way of a coping mechanism people will act illogically to keep the coping mechanism in place.
