It’s true, and it’s by design.
Big companies are always looking for ways to get rid of the lowest paid employees so that the highest paid can reap the benefits of “cost cutting”. When customer service is lousy, you’re more likely to buy from the same store online than to fully boycott them. Now they can get rid of their employees altogether and the CEO & CFO absorb those wages.
Of course, it’s not entirely one-sided either. More people are generally more entitled these days and expect more than they deserve from their interactions with service workers. Everyone thinks they deserve the red carpet treatment when they spend $1.99. They could receive well above average treatment and still feel jilted. People are literally being shot to death over a chicken mcnugget.
You would be hard pressed to convince me that’s not equally deliberate. Who wants to risk going to the store for a loaf of bread when you might not make it back? More people are shopping online for daily errands type of stuff. The big businesses are making out like bandits and the small businesses that actually focus on quality products and services lose out.
None of it is by happenstance.
People have too much entitlement these days. The younger generation is being raised with the mindset of "me, me, me" which is contrary to the notion of customer service.
Whenever I go somewhere, I am generally appalled by the attitudes of the emoloyees when dealing with customers. Back when I had customer oriented positions, I would have gotten fired for acting the way they do.
You can tell that they just don't care, and they act as if dealing with customers is an inconvenience, when it's literally their job. I've honestly stopped going to some businesses, based on the way their employees treat customers. Why would I want to patronize those places?
Customer service at drive thrus is the worst. I used to work at Burger King, many years ago, and when we had a customer in the drive through, we were trained that it was imperative they spend no longer than 3-5 minutes in line.
Any longer, and our entire store when get in trouble. Now? You're lucky if you can get your food in 15-20 minutes, and that's insane. Whenever I visit a drive through, I can't help but wonder what the hell happened.
Not to mention the employees generally act like they just don't give a shit, anymore. I always feel as if they are vaguely insulted that I have the audacity to visit their place of business. How dare I interrupt them by placing an order!
It's changing quite a bit from what it may have used to be. A lot of people working these jobs now don't think it's all that worth it, especially for the pay compared to the cost of living but it depends on the location.
I'm sure many businesses are itching themselves silly waiting to offload it onto AI as much as possible.
I haven't experienced this much. Though I also generally support workers not bending over backwards or allowing customers to mistreat them, so maybe it's just a perception thing. but it's very rare for me to meet someone in a customer service position doing anything notably rude regardless of their age.

Whenever I contact customer service, nine out five of ten it’s pretty appalling! Especially the remote stuff.
I had to deal with some rather rude behaviour from customer service last week and subsequently make a complaint!
customer service has been going downhill since the 70s.
@exitseven as was you
Real customer service costs money. It's cheaper to set up a call centre in India to fob customers off with double talk.
In a global world it's not dying but one more reason for the US trade deficit.
It is dying in a lot of different fields
It's bad. You're right
