Who should be expected to give up their career in this situation?

This is purely hypothetical, and not actually happening.

Say its a husband and wife. The husband is the primary bread winner. His annual salary is 150k. The wife just finished school and was offered her dream job. the catch, they need to move 2000 miles away. From one high cost of living area to another high cost of living area. the other catch, Her job is less than 50% of the husbands current income, at 45k annually. His job won't transfer him, and there aren't remote work options. Who should be expected to give up ones career? The husband? or the wife? at least until a better option presents.

I personally vote that the wife should wait for a better option. Especially considering the husbands salary is 3 times what she would make.

Ideally, this should have been discussed and decided before the wife began her studies. Waiting until the investment has been made makes this more problematic.

There are many factors to consider.
1. Are they close in age or is one much older than the other?
2. What are the husband's prospects for employment if he relocates with the wife?
3. What is their status with having children? Does wife want to be a stay-at-home mom with the kids?
4. What support do they get from both families in their current location and what support would they have if they moved?
5. How close is husband to retirement and have they saved sufficiently for retirement?

Neither “have to” give up their careers. They can just give up their marriage.
If he doesn’t give her exactly what she wants, she divorces him, takes everything he owns and half of his income. She is now worth $125k/year and he’s worth $75k/year. She’ll also get his retirement when the time comes. He’ll retire in poverty and all her dreams come true. She’ll never acknowledge his contributions either. He’ll always be the selfish misogynist who wanted to oppress her. She’ll probably even poison his kids against him. That’s how “compromise” works in western marriages.
I don’t know why men still marry. It’s a completely masochistic choice by any reasonable measure.
