What are your thoughts on Donald J. Trump's executive order to charge foreigners more at national parks?

Seems fair, considering so many countries to this to us. I just feel bad for French tourists, because France charges everyone the same. I posted on his Instagram to exempt French tourists and others who don't charge us more. But yeah, let's see how THEY like price discrimination!

I mean by all means that is something a place can do. Price discrimination is allowed. It seems a silly direction though and should very obviously not be done at the federal level.

That said, implementing this at a state level where it is rather than an increase in price a reduction in price to the people of that community - presumably because they help pay for it to begin with - is completely fair.

So basically, sure. It should be the other way around and the distinction is important. Doing so at a federal level is stupid as it is harming relations rather than letting the citizens wink at the advantage of being a citizen. But the price discrimination in itself is fine. It is just the wrong way every step of the way there. And with Trump it is as always just there to distract from his latest fuckup.

honestly i would need to know how that actually effects the economy. like if this deters tourism and makes the profits of the touristic branche go down, that's terrible. but if actually this increases the profits cause tourists are willing to pay, that's great. like are these facts already public? i'm guessing not, cause usually studies researching this take 2-3 years.

by the way you mentioned the french are already doing this. but i'd argue paris especially is such a strong brand, they can actually get away with it. i know some Asian countries actually make their tourist attractions cheaper for the tourists than for the domestic visitors.

People that hunt and fish that aren't residents of that state get charged more for licensing. Mainly because they aren't part of the tax base for that state and don't contribute to upkeep on lakes, rivers, campsites... I guess the same holds true for foreigner's that go to federal parks.

Some states charge out of staters more at state parks. Their argument is, the locals are paying taxes towards their up keep. And many reservations and some private attractions do this too.

In South Africa, they introduced it to make them more affordable for locals, but I know by locals they mean "black people"

It’s fair. Other countries do the same to foreigners. Tourists don’t mind that much as they are visiting that site once in their life. A lot of times entrance fees are bundled into the price of their tour for a tour company.

Okay, so me and people I know are fucking delussional or making it up. You're an EU resident, so you probably just didn't notice, as the EU is treated as one country. But it's not just Europe, many countries do this.

I researched the five sites you gave me (Italy?) and nothing came up. EU laws would rather prohibit such different price schemes, by the way. Doesn’t mean that not somewhere, something shady is happening, but these are exemptions, not the rule.

Maybe the EU changed the law then, at least for state run sites. I remember my buddy visited the Colesseum almost 15 years ago with his Belgian girlfriend, she had her EU ID, but the guy saw that she was with an American and charged her more too.

And when I was at Wawel Castle, the lady wouldn't give me a student discount because I didn't have an EU ID, and not only that, she charged me the tourist price. And you apparantly remember my other examples

You did not get the student student because you weren’t a EU citizen, you didn’t get it because you had no valid student ID. It’s the same for us, happened my times, when I or someone else forgot his student credentials.
All those sites you mentioned before had only one universal price scheme for all tourists, apart from one site in Venice, that gave locals (local Venetians) free access.
