One of the girls I knew said she stopped speaking to her best friend of 20 years because she didn’t vote in the election and it’s people that don’t vote that are the reason problems and assholes. She stop speaking to people that voted for trump and she has no friends. Some people say friendships ended. That’s very sad. I mean no offense but Trump is an asshole and I don’t know if I would be friends with people that are Trump supporters. Im friends with one of my closest friends and she didn’t vote. I told her that she can’t complain if she didn’t. I am still friends with her. I voted. I told her she should have but it is what it is. The girl said I should find another friend because she didn’t vote and she doesn’t care and I need to find a better best friend. I told her just because she didn’t vote doesn’t mean I should stop being friends with her and now she won’t speak to me. That is why I don’t like talking politics.

But you poking her because she didn't VOTE is not talking politics. Voting is your major voice in our democracy and is the primary responsibility of a citizen.

If she doesn't understand that, says she doesn't care, and doesn't want to be friends with you anymore, something ELSE is going on with her.

I understand that you don't want to stop being friends with her, but clearly, she wants to drop you. Guilt? Anger?

Her, "I don't care..." and "You need a better best friend," are both disturbing statements.

Politics is kind of the main reason friendships end because it’s a fundamental difference in beliefs, especially now as identity politics has become the norm. It’s not really outrageous to end a relationship of any kind because of a difference in beliefs in which groups of people are allowed to have rights

And no not stupid at all to unfriend someone who invalidates their point just because they think you should've done this instead and because they didn't their opinion don't matter. I don't think this was even a political issue it's the disrespect in the example you gave.

As to not be friends over politics no that makes sense. Political issues are tied to morals mostly and why would someone want to be friends with opposed morals? It's healthy to have some perspective, and try find a middle ground but if there moral is 'Your a evil baby killer because abortion is killing' why would you be friends with someone who thinks your a baby killer? More importantly why would they be friends with you?

On the contrary, I think politics is one of the things that you should make or break friendships over. Not normal political disagreements obviously, people are not going to care if you argue about what height the buildings in your local area is restricted to. However, things like abortion or rights are intimately tied to your morality and identity. If you have such a deeply held disagreement then you are fundamentally incompatible in the first place so why even attempt to maintain such a friendship?

In 2015 I had to move my office to another building. I met the professor that had the office next to mine. She seemed to be nice and I thought it would be nice to meet more people. We became friendly until she found out I supported Trump. Then she refused to even say Hi to me. I had a Trump bumper sticker on my door and I think she was the one who ripped it off. When Trump won the 2016 election she used to stay in her office with the lights out and i think I heard her crying more than once. It really took a heart of stone not to laugh.

yes but people can be extreme emotionally, especially left people. Large part of my family is right leaning... because they run busineess and are independent minded. Some people are left leaning. The one side is welcoming and hasn't thrown out the left. I'd bet if situation was reversed, it would be different.

I think it's very dumb to end a friendship over politics especially if that friendship has lasted longer than the course of that man's presidency. He will be president for 4 more years and then he's out. Your friendship if it's a good one, will last a lot longer than that if not forever.

In my opinion it's very stupid to end a friendship because your friend didn't vote or didn't vote how you did. I have friends on both sides of the isle and never once have I ended a friendship over politics, though I have had a few friends on the left end the relationship because I either didn't end friendships with people on the right or I disagreed with them politically on an issue. I try to get along with everyone regardless of politics.

Regardless of who you voted for, no its not stupid. Friendships should be easy to maintain like a garden and there are fruits to your labor to make it worth while. Friendships where you spend more time in a tug of war aren't worth it
