Why is the cruel Canadian government punishing their citizens by putting a 300% tax on American cheese?

Because they are too stupid to realize they can't win. If their tariffs hadn't been so high in the first place, maybe this would not have happened.
The Canadian economy is entirely dependent on the US. They were on the gravy train too long. They need to admit they need the US way more than the US needs Canada. They need to adjust their policies accordingly.
Because the typical media only makes a big deal out of Trump doing the same thing everyone else does. We've seen so many examples of this.
They rely on people not looking anything up and doing research. They are right. People DON'T look anything up. They just believe everything they hear.
You know, it’s funny that according to leftists, tariffs are only a problem for US consumers. When applied to US exports, according to leftists, there’s absolutely no problem and their complaints cease.
Most American "cheese" is in fact pasteurized cheese product and it is G... ROSS! I switched over to using sliced cheddar and provolone a number of years ago and I will never eat another slice of that disgusting garbage again.
So in a weird sort of way, even if inadvertently, Canada did themselves a favor.
I dunno. America has been accused of spreading misery throughout the world. Do we want to lend more credibility to that? Canada may have... I can't believe I'm about to say this... done the world a favor.
Canada has had restrictive tariffs on US farm products for decades. I remember when I was a little kid I saw US farmers dumping thousands of gallons of milk down the drain. My father tried to explain it to me but it really made no sense. Now i understand what it was all about.
I guess it is ok to put over a 100% tariff on our products for decades and we did not tariff them till the man tariffed them and they did not like it. Trump just leveled the playing field, and they do not like it. Really tough shit Canada
They're taking their anger out on themselves, because they're so pissed off at repeatedly getting owned by DJT.
Maybe because the U. S. is putting tarrifs on their goods so it's a reactionary tarrif. Thr other option, which would be worse for American dairy farmers is to not buy any cheese from the U. S. at all, which thry can easily do.
This is not rocket science. Canadians put a outrageous tariff in American dairy products, because they are protecting their own farmers. I admire them for that. And Trump is putting tariffs on imports because he wants to protect American companies. This is not a difficult concept. It has nothing to do with the cheese shortage in Canada. There's no way in hell that Canadians can compete with the price of American dairy products. They just can't. So they artificially raise the price on American dairy products, to protect Canadian dairy.
I lived on a border Town near Canada and the Canadians come down by the thousands per day to take advantage of cheap American products. Canadian products are expensive to make up for all the free things you get that you think you are free. The only way Canada can make up for it is by applying outrageous tariffs on American goods.. Smart move on their part.
The problem with Trump's tarrifs on some goods is that we don't produce them here. Tarrif foreign corn, soybeans, etc. That's fine, we produce enough we don't need it from other countries. However, there are some things we don't produce here, either by choice, production costs, or whatever other reason. Putting high tarrifs on them means they just aren't here. We aren't producing them anyway, so it won't encourage buying from American producers, because we don't have any. That's the issue with his tarrifs, also who pays the costs, American citizens. Then of course he doesn't really understand what a trade deficits is. You probably have one with your barber. You are paying your barber more than he is paying you. You are paying him for your hair cut, so you're getting value out of it, just not $. That's what a trade deficit is, you are paying thrm more for their products than they are paying you for yours.
To promote Canadian farming. Our cheese is great, not missing yours
Didn’t say it was bad, said we don’t need it

Sometimes
should i let you in on a secret? you don't have to buy American cheese. import tax offices hate that trick.
and by the way American cheese isn't even real cheese. you're better off not eating it.
well that's true. but i'd argue that not consuming American cheese is a net positive, cause real cheese is more healthy.
so i'd see it as more of a healthy lifestyle incentive rather than a punishment.
i think since you made the example with cheese, i think you showed exactly how it can be done without being hyporcitical. by puting high tarrifs on products that create a burden on your healthcare system. like alcohol, highly processed foods with mostly saturated fats, cigarretes and so on. I don't know if Canada is doing that but i would not see that as hypocritical if they did it that way.
Pay back.
I will just eat more to help make up the difference.
That's a over-quota tariff so the practical tariff from a customer POV is way lower.
Because your money still has a king on it so you should be buying British cheese!
They're going to ruin Canadian economy!
Agreed, he used to run out bank... damn liberal almost bankrupted the place
Why shouldn't they?
