How do you feel about Trump putting 100% tariffs on semiconductors?

President Donald Trump said that he plans to impose 100 percent tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of imported semiconductors used in consumer electronics and other products, but indicated he would not charge companies that commit to making chips in the U. S.

“We’ll be putting a tariff of approximately 100 percent on chips and semiconductors,” Trump said at a White House event where Apple CEO Tim Cook announced plans to boost the company’s investment in the United States by $100 billion.

Trump said companies that make semiconductors in the U. S. will not face the levies. However, it was not entirely clear if he meant he would exclude chips that those companies import from abroad, or just observing that chips made domestically will not face tariffs.

Trump’s announcement stems from an investigation that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick launched on April 1 under Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act. That legislation empowers the president to restrict imports deemed a risk to national security.

It's great! Bring some semi-conductor plants back to the US. It works. Trump knows it works. And the companies know it works.

Why do you think there are so many Japanese auto plants in the US now? The US gave them a strong incentive to. Don't let them get by with lopsided trade policies.

Every country has protectionist policies, but most have stronger protection than the US. It's past time to turn the table.

It is very appropriate to give close scrutiny to those products which we import almost exclusively, and which are essential for our national welfare!

Well tariffs are a tax on either imports or exports so, when the govt puts a tariff on imports it charges an import company more to bring in goods to this country.

Once the import company raises the price on corporations, they put their own tax in the form of inflation onto the consumer buying their products.

100% raise on semiconductors will hurt those that want to buy those goods.
Semiconductors are in every modern household appliance : Phones , Washing Machines , Dishwashers , etc. This will hurt the consumer when they need a new electronic inside their home. Pretty much every American will be affected.

Top brands like Whirlpool. LG , Subzero , GE Appliances , BlueStar , Speed Queen and more all assemble their goods in America. Though they need parts imported from other countries to maintain cheapness, this will raise the prices on consumers. Literally will raise prices on consumers. This is not good at a time of economic instability caused by The Pandemic which hasn’t gone away, in-fact inflation has only risen in the last few months.

He wants companies to start making chips in the US so we do not have to rely on foreign countries. So basically the US gains jobs, the US is more secure and the US treasury gets billions of dollars in tariffs.
