Why is it called The White House?

It was originally called the presidential Palace and the executive's mansion. But Teddy Roosevelt didn't like that and changed it to the White house. Maybe he thought it was a bit uppity or something. And it was never intended to be white, it's made of sandstone. A lime-based whitewash was applied to to protect the stands from the freezing weather.

Things you may have noticed and photographs are even more so if you've been there, it's actually painted white. I think that may be a clue.
