Students in NYS are LEGALLY banned from using phones in school now. Also banned? Playing cards!! (Over gambling concerns) 🙄 Thoughts?

Stunningly, math teachers have technically been banned from using them when teaching probability in many districts. Yes there is the potential for gambling but JFC life IS risk analysis and card games of all stripes are VERY useful for that purpose. I just don't understand USA American "education" sometimes.

Okay so, I am all for moderated use of anything especially technology and especially for today’s youth and students.

However, making this a “gambling concern” is ridiculous. As you mentioned playing cards are used in gambling such as, Poker , Blackjack , Texas Hold ‘Em , and more.

In classrooms when I was attending Highschool (speaking in general), educators had phone organizers which you were assigned a number and would get up at end of class to pickup your phone.
That enabled learning , distraction free environment though the way New York State Govt sees it, is a “gambling issue” so aren’t willing to compromise.

NY wants to ban students from bringing smart watches too which I’m against this measure, since how much gambling can one student do on a little 1:1 screen? C’mon. Now we are getting ridiculous.

Not to mention, I believe students can gamble with school assigned laptops just as fine as phones if not easier. Interesting how there is no measure to secure school internet devices.

Again, for the purposes of limiting gambling this is weak and foolish.

It seems that yet again legislators want an easy scapegoat to an issue and promoting it as a good thing that will deter gambling however in-fact won’t do a damn thing. Children can still gamble at home on their parents computer or their device when they are not in a classroom learning or what have you.
I don’t care Red or Blue, I stand against this. This is a waste of time.

You know, when I was a classroom teacher, I had to be flexible, including with the use of any manipulatives. Is that too hard for you, Pepper?

Probability may be most commonly taught in AP Statistics anyway.

Phones are distracting, I understand why they would be banned, even if I don't know if a whole law is really necessary and why you couldn't just use school policy for it.

As for banning playing cards, I don't believe that will stop anyone from gambling. It is a dumb law. But at least it is better and makes more sense than legally banning nicknames. I'd much rather go to school with dumb NYC laws than with autonomy-stripping Texas laws.

1) Find an issue to “solve”
2) Find thing to blame
3) Add “Won’t someone please think of the children?”
