Should skools be allowed to ban cell phones? Should they be forced to ban cell phones, or do parents bear some responsibility for how engaged their children are with the education system?
This news report doesn’t get into the details of how the state’s cell phone ban from skools is affecting actual academic achievement. Only that the kids are reading more recreationally and actually engaging other people in person again. That’s all well and good, but they are there to learn how to receive, process, store and apply new information. That is the primary purpose of education. Parents can withhold phones and arrange play dates. To what extent should skools be allowed to ban cell phones? To what extent should skool administrators be forced to do parents’ jobs?
There is no need for minors in school to have cell phones during school hours. If there is ever an emergency, teachers and the school office have phones children can use.
I have no issue with children keeping cell phones turned off and in lockers during school hours,if that is at all POSSIBLE.
However, my feeling is kids will go to lockers, turn on their phones to check them between classes, or make calls, or surf in bathrooms because THEY'RE KIDS.
So, it seems the absolute ban is the only thing that would work because there's always someone who will ignore or break the rule.
Let's face it, school has a tendency to be boring. And all that content on phones IS EXCITING and FUNNY and ENTERTAINING. And kids want excitement, fun and entertainment more than they want learning because they don't know the value of learning for their future.
I think lessons in tolerance of some boring aspects of learning is important for children because there will be thousands of hours of boring aspects of life and work that people have to get through to earn income and learn new information for later in life.
If that isn't learned early on, it handicaps youth. Parents can call school offices if there's an emergency or children need to be excused. Children can call their parents in the same manner.
Generations of children got through school without having personal phones with them. They're NOT necessary. What they are is convenient and, sad to say, more than anything, fun. Maybe there could be a midway: phones left in lockers, or with homeroom teachers. And if a student abuses the privilege, the phone goes to the office and is sent home with a message that the student cannot have the phone at school, period.
But here's the rub: Will parents go along with this too? That's a big?
Good first step. promotes talking to each other and how to resolve conflicts without weapons. How to deal with people and hopefully learn respect again. Furthermore, how to read a book, which is also very important! Less ADHD due to sensory overload through this digital world. Platforms where you compare yourself or what you don't have with others are harmful. They are harmful for adults and even more so for children.
Completely ban phones in school. In the very rare case of an emergency, there are other ways to get a hold of the kids. There is absolutely no reason for kids to have their phone in school.
Ban calculators also. They make people stupid. Ban computers also, unless they are needed for a particular class.
Nah. Advanced math classes not only allow calculators, they require specific ones, and for good reason. No reasonable instructor is going to expect kids to do calculus and trigonometry longhand. Every test would be a fifty page booklet and would take days to complete. Using calculators isn’t handicapping anyone who doesn’t want to be handicapped. Same for computers. Though i would eliminate some of the more common programs that help people do the simple things like grammar and spelling checks.
I see no problem with the kind of cell phone that I just described above for kids in school in so far it is not accessible to them during classes. Twin classes, a kid might want to call his mother or his father for some reason. With respect to the school. May have to change the time of his or her pick up. Or things I can't think of.
I guarantee you didn’t take calculus and trigonometry in skool. Just because you’re a dumbf*ck, that doesn’t mean that everyone should be punished for your clearly willful ignorance.
New York banned phones. What happens in a family emergency? I had a family emergency, called the school emergency number, my granddaughter's twin was not in the same school, was in the hospital, and we were not able to find anyone to pick her up. and in the middle of transferring her sister to Sloan Memorial. Called at nine forty-five AM. My granddaughter was outside the school at 5 P. M. when a teacher asked her why she was there for two hours waiting for pick up. At that point, the teacher said she had a message that her sister was in the hospital. 8 hours passed before she got the message. From that point on, she carried her phone. The school advised she was to carry her phone with her just because of the past problem. Do you really want to rely on an untrustworthy notification system that takes 8 hours to get an emergency message?

When I was in school sneaking in a transistor radio was a big deal. You would always eventually get caught and it would be confiscated. Why is a cell phone any different?
I'm kinda for schools banning cell phones. It's always good to get them out of the kids' hands. But I also get that in an emergency a parent should be able to get in contact with their kid.
Cell phones aren’t necessary to reach kids in skool. You call the skool and administrators relay a message or pull the kid out of class to take the call.
I would not ban them from schools, but kids have to leave them in their lockers when in classes. They are there to learn, not to text a girlfriend/boyfriend during class.
Whale I am not sure what the answer is, I agree that they must be put under some kind of a restriction cause if the children are anything like there parents there not falling the rules cause too many times I see people on there cellphone's when the have just left home and are driving in their cars and driving down the road, when they know it is against the the laws and can be sent to jail. You can't let students have access to cameras to expose what the staff is doing. Look I get teachers get frustrated with kids texting, but I think it's far safer for them to have them. Especially with all the school shootings these days
Not a big deal in the slightest but if taught from young how useful a tool to take measurements and organise then this could turn the tide away from an addiction waiting to happen.
Cell phone are the education system now. Taking a phone out of a student's hands is like taking a book out of old people's hands when they were in school. Whatever industry they go into, their whole futures and careers are on those phones and the ways they continue to develop.
You really think it’ll stop kids from bringing them? Don’t get me wrong, I agree they should be banned. But, they’ll still bring them to school anyway.
