9 moI’m in favor of mental health evaluations being added to the list of checks required before purchasing a firearm. I also think ongoing evaluations should be the norm. I think Japan and Switzerland have similar laws. Switzerland and Canada are both good examples for gun control reforms. Both have relatively high gun ownership rates and relatively low gun crime by comparison.
The problem is that this issue is managed almost exclusively by extremists on both sides. The democrats want to exclusively disarm law abiding citizens so that the violent criminals they sympathize with have easy access to vulnerable victims. The gun nutz want the wild west, where everyone can just gun down everyone else for the faintest perceived slights.
Both groups have been shouting so loudly for so long that nobody even notices the sensible suggestions coming from moderates, gun owners and not.00 Reply

Asker9 moAnd round and round we go! Look at the comments from all the MAGATS who think the "violent trannies" are the problem. They refuse to face reality or offer any real solutions. Our Allies figured it FAST!!!

Leftists can never give anything close to a satisfactory reason why the legions of law abiding firearms owners should give up their firearms. Knucklehead Tim Walz was asked two years ago to provide security for the school, but the request was ignored.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to provide armed police officers to every school instead of trying to ensure that only criminals have firearms, which would sure result in an increase in muggings and home invasions. - 9 mo
How many school resource officers are needed? It’s a minute percentage of a police force, especially in urban areas. Do maybe they have to hire some more cops.
Your excuse is so incredibly weak it’s clear you just want to take all firearms away from law-abiding people, regardless of the consequences. - 9 mo
@Avicenna hiring more cops and training them correctly isn't an issue I have, but that comes out of your taxes, so if you want more cops, I'm sure you're willing to pay more in taxes to pay them and pay for their training. Meanwhile if you want them deployed to schools immediately, we'll see an increase in crime in the areas they were while new cops are being trained to take over their areas. Meanwhile you are paying more and all you see from it for a while is an increase in crime.

9 moIt's just another day of Making America Great Again. I'm pretty sure more guns are the answer though. Just like every other school shooting. MAGA for the win!
20 Reply Why do you condemn "maga" for this? Do you not know there are deranged psychotic killers across the political scale? Do you contend there has not been any mass murders from your side? What do you know of the shooter that is fact and not just wishful thinking? Also, you may want to adjust the smug moral mask you're wearing! It doesn't match your parties stance on the life of unborn or just born children!!

Anonymous(36-45)9 moonly one solution required. STOP DEMONIZING PEOPLE FOR HAVING DIFFERENT BELIEFS THAN YOU. The end. There are more guns than people inside the country, so it's clearly not the guns that are the problem. I have stated the solution. Let me know when it's on the table for discussion.
10 Reply6.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. In other countries, citizens are unable to obtain the weapons needed to perpetrates such killings. Consequently, they don't experience such mass murders.

@Twalli: It’s really intellectual lazy to cite two other societies very different from ours and simply assume the results can be the same. That damages your credibility.
When we start looking at facts, we begin to see why your claim doesn’t stand up to the most minute scrutiny:
phys.org/news/2025-08-gun-ownership-australia.html
There are more privately owned firearms in Australia now than before restrictions went into effect in the 1990s. That means that firearms aren’t illegal there. - 9 mo
@Twalli : Japan has very low crime in in general, so there isn’t the same need for firearm ownership for self-defense like in the US. Japan is also an island nation, unlike the US and its demographics and society are very different than ours.
I’m not sure what weapons the Yakuza have in Japan, but it’s irrelevant because Japan has low levels of crime. - 9 mo
@Twalli I don't, because I live in countries that aren't swimming in them. It's better that way.
Apparently, you can own an AR-15 or similar in the UK, but you'd have to spend years building up to it without showing any signs you might use it on people. Even the police don't get guns without psych evaluation, and even then there's a lower age limit, iirc. - 9 mo
@goaded: It’s because criminals can injure or kill you. For example- imagine a smaller woman living alone and there’s a home invasion by a violent convict. She has little to no chance of fighting him off with her hands, but her chances are much better if she has a firearm. Furthermore, if criminals don’t know if you’re armed, they are much less likely to attack you.
Law abiding people being armed reduces crime. Note that mass shooters go after soft targets where they know no one is armed.
- 9 mo
@Avicenna "imagine a smaller woman living alone and there’s a home invasion by a violent convict" I can imagine that. I can't see any evidence of it happening regularly, if at all. Show me a news article of it happening. Preferably after 2000. Does it happen in other countries?
Did you consider that stronger doors, windows and locks could be an effective passive solution? Best of all, they even work when you're not at home, which is when any half-way sane criminal will try to break in. - 9 mo
@goaded: You and @Twalli have everyone laughing at you. And the default leftist love of violent criminals is on display from both of you.
It's also typical for leftists to pretend something doesn't happen when in fact it does, and quite often. Just because you want to pretend it does, doesn't mean the rest of us are willing to take leave of our senses when we know better. Furthermore, not only do you never back up the nonsense you post, you never accept facts presented to you that show your bizarre claims are wrong, so stop pretending your mind is open to facts and reason.
Twalli- you're welcome to provide evidence of the fact you're claiming, but even if it is accurate, that still leaves a lot of home invasions occurring when someone is home. And that someone is unlikely to be able to fight off a burglar/invader who has the element of surprise unless they can use a firearm.
- 9 mo
@Avicenna Maybe among people who think "sleepy Joe" is the height of wit. You still claim I meant a constitutional amendment to ban gerrymandering would consist of two words: "ban gerrymandering", and that a constitutional amendment can be unconstitutional. You're a joke.

- 9 mo
Asker, you can try to write English.
And yes, Jan 6th was a peaceful protest.
The only people trying to rewrite what happened that day is leftists.
There was a Holocaust, it was done by leftists who called themself German national socialists, populary shortened down to nazis.
Slaves didn’t love slavery, but thankfully the Republicans helped American slaves gain their freedom. And there was no party switch no matter how much leftards like to claim otherwise.

Asker, the trans shooter did indeed hate Jews, but he was very specific about his hatred for Jews who support Israel, which is a hatred mostly found among leftists these days. He also hated Trump (and made that clear with inscriptions“, which is also consistent with being leftist.

@Twalli: Does that really sound like an attempt to „overthrow the US government“ to you? Do you think some protestors could have taken over the government when there were over a million active duty troops? You have done idea how vast the federal government is- overthrow means taking control- do you honestly think some protestors could do that?
The claim your making is ridiculous. - 9 mo
- 9 mo
@Avicenna The >1 million active troops weren't there, so that means they weren't much help either way. As for taking control, you'd be surprised what can happen if a number of leaders are killed, which seemed to be their plan. Not a lot of ambiguity in chanting "Hang Mike Pence". Fleeing The Capitol shows an amount of fear that peaceful protests typically do not elicit. Plus, with a green light from Trump, the only person legally able to deploy troops, it wouldn't be that hard to ensure that they were not in position to stop it.
- 9 mo
@Twalli: You obviously don’t know anything about the military if you think only Trump can issue commands, especially in the event of an attempted overthrow of the government.
If you think there was a plan to „kill leaders“, you need a lot more evidence than what you provided. And the idea that a bunch of protestors could take over and exert control over something as vast as the US government and society is laughable.
How long do you think it would take the 82nd Airborne to get there? Think the protestors could fight them off?
- 9 mo
@Twalli: You’ve forgotten about the National Guard. And I’m sure no one is going to punish a commander who responded to an actual insurrection.
„Declaring a President unable to govern“ with the 25th Amendment unlikely to happen in the insurrection scenario (Congress not being available for Section 4).

Just saying the two democratic groups you mentioned were conservative. Not really up for debate, at least between anyone who isn't a historian (which I'm guessing you aren't one). I, however, am one and historians don't debate whether or not they're conservative, it's agreed that they were.
- 9 mo
@Avicenna There can be debate, but much like disagreeing with a scientist about science just means you're wrong, disagreeing with a historian about history means the same thing. And did he describe what his socialism was? Really, the words used don't matter if you don't know their meaning. Just like you thought democrats were always liberal, when they weren't.
- 9 mo
@Twalli: He certainly did describe it in the interview, plus we have the historical record. Furthermore, a number of my family members lived in Germany or nearby after leaving it during the Nazi era. I’ve also taught World History.
History is subject to interpretation, and historians certainly have their own biases. And certainly you’re aware of the „appeal to authority“ fallacy, right?
- 9 mo
@Avicenna I don't study Hitler, so I will admit I am not an expert on his works and speeches. I did have a passing interest in World War II for a while, but now I like looking at times at least 25 years before that at the latest. I can say that his actions do not meet with any definition of socialism I've ever read or heard of.
- 9 mo
@Avicenna in layman's terms, it levels the playing field. We all start out at the same level. Our education level is the same, so we all can enter higher education without a better education level than our peers. Personal growth and advancement are not goals; we all seek to elevate the community as a whole. This is all doable but can't actually be put into place without a massive paradigm shift, which I think I'd need to know game theory better to see how it could happen.
