What is valuable about having high standards?

You were born into a society that tells you who to be, and how to act. The same society that is vague about dealing with people, feelings, and how prioritize expenses. With that, the question (that probably won't have a strictly direct answer) is: can't we just be human? We try to live up to endless expectations every day. Every person paints a mental picture of the other, and the person getting painted is self-conscious because they can't see the portrait. Not to encourage losing respect for yourself by standing people up. If an expectation is not audibly said, why the anxiety? Putting expectations on others might be easier than having expectations for yourself. How do you define high and low standards? If expectations and standards differ tell me how they do in the comments.
