What good is arresting bad guys it judges just let them go?

Question

Sean Dunn assaulted a federal agent by throwing a submarine sandwich at him. Thr Grand jury would not indict him so he was released. Federal law enforcement has arrested over 1300 people in DC over the last two weeks. Crime has decreased dramatically. Between taking that many criminals off the street and sending a message that criminal behavior will no longer be tolerated. Even the DC mayor had to admit that what President Trump did was successful.

The troops will only be there for 30 days. If the courts just release all these criminals will it just go back to business as usual?

The sandwich thing is obviously ridiculous, but you're right - judges are completely undermining the police's ability to do their job, by giving sentences that are far, far too lenient.

The problem is that there's only so much prison capacity (which is already being exceeded), and it's extremely expensive - so the only way this works, is if you start taxing the rich to pay for it, and I don't see too many politicians (least of all Trump) willing to do that. Otherwise, where else is the money going to come from?

There's also no evidence that prisons work as much of a deterrent, or successfully reform inmates (and ex-convicts are going to have a hard time finding jobs etc), so once you imprison someone for some minor offence, you kind of have to accept that you might well end up paying to keep them in prison for the rest of their lives.

So then, really, you need to start tackling the root cause of their criminality, which is usually a perceived (and probably real) lack of better alternatives. These aren't educated, middle-class people, with bright futures as doctors, teachers, managers or whatever else. They're poor, uneducated people with zero future, who are no worse off in prison than they are out in the world.
To his credit, Trump kind of realizes this, which is why he talks about bringing back manufacturing jobs to the US, to give poor, uneducated people some kind of future. Unfortunately, he's not an economist, or even a person of average intelligence, so he has no idea how to achieve that - and to be fair, I'm not sure anyone else does either.

The other relatively new problem - especially in the UK - is that a huge number of criminals are under 18. All those moped gangs you here about in London, stabbing each other, stealing phones and bikes, etc - they're all just kids, so they know they will face zero consequences, even if they are caught.

I believe it was Tucker that sued the government to get video released of January 6th. Why do you suppose there were certain videos they didn't want us to see?
For a brief time there was a video on YouTube that involved the buffalo man. The police let him in the building, treated him nicely, gave him a tour of the place, walked him over to a rack with brochures, then after that he went to prison.
So I don't want to hear some dumbass saying that all judges are on the straight and narrow. Judges offer themselves to the highest bidder.

And yes, throwing a sandwich or anything at a Federal officer is a felony. Shooting someone is a felony but if the judge lets them go, what can you do? There's a story about a judge that gave a guy a sentence of about 60 days. The guys crime was raping a little girl for 7 years.

Whether you agree with their decisions or not, it was the judges job to do. It would not work well for police to try to do both their own jobs and also the judges jobs.

That case is a strange one, and muddier than people want to admit, i think.
Was that sandwich a dangerous or deadly weapon by any stretch of the imagination? Absolutely not. Was he even picking a fight? Also no, he ran immediately after chucking the sub. But we can’t very well just let everyone think throwing “harmless” things at law enforcement officers is acceptable. A night in jail is plenty enough punishment. Plus the jack*ss lost his cushy gubment job. Ell oh ell!
You need to step back and reevaluate if you think that the government should expend all of the resources of a full trial to send that guy to prison. If they really wanted to throw the book at him, they should have charged him with littering, or interfering and obstructing law enforcement. At least those would have been prosecutable. If a cop is traumatized by a thrown sammich, he or she probably shouldn’t be a cop.

Crime - isn't excusable (when it directly hurts other individuals), but it indicates trends: lack of self discipline, lack of willingness to positively contribute, frustration, social disorder, etc.

Will simply battening it down remove the source?

LOL Why don't you include the stats on what the majority of people were arrested FOR? Or how 49 homeless encampments were removed and arrests made for being homeless. Or how 2100 officers confiscated 10 pistols being carried without a license. Meanwhile, your red states continue to pass "no license, concealed carry" laws like they're giving out candy.

One of the reasons for having grand juries is to counter governmental overreach. It worked (multiple times). One woman's case was put before three grand juries, all of which rejected the government's claims.

It's amazing what you can achieve if you spend millions of taxpayer dollars a day. It doesn't solve any of the underlying problems and normalises having troops on the streets of US cities.

If a judge is letting them go then you probably did something incredibly stupid procedurally and are very bad at your job.

My suggestion is that whoever is making all these failed arrests should be fired and replaced with someone who can fulfill the actual do their job.

I think the punishment fit the crime in this case. Disrespecting a police officer with a soft sandwich netted the man a wasted weekend in custody. The proper message was sent, that we won't tolerate disrespect.
