I don't get that argument at all. The moment a weapons shipment crosses the border into Ukraine, it has become a Ukrainian weapon system. Whatever gets targeted with it is completely under the responsibility of the Ukrainian military, defending their country. Putin just uses every psychological trick in the book to frighten Western politicians, when we should not be.

If Ukraine fires them, they are technically not US weapons, and a counterstrike on US soil by Russia would be totally unjustified.

Now, if the US fired the weapon, then Russia would be justified in a counterattack. The 1964 movie "Fail-Safe" basically did that: a US B52 dropped a nuclear bomb on Moscow, and the US President allowed a Soviet bomber to drop a similar nuclear bomb on New York City (tit for tat), in order to prevent further escalation.

The US provides the money, the weapons, the intelligence, the training, the advisors, and Ukraine does nothing without the approval of the US. We are involved in every aspect. It is a war between the US and Russia using Ukrainian personnel. It is not like us selling weapons to the highest bidder with no involvement in the decisions. If our weapons hit targets inside Russia, they are justified in tit for tat.
