Most people are mostly good. That is a fact. The media focuses on the bad. Fear and hate mongering pays well. People are generally more willing to report bad experiences than good. We take the good for granted until it feels out of place. More than ever, we tend to choose a single aspect of someone’s character or a single deed that they did and use it to hyperbolically generalize their full character and everything they’ve ever done. Nobody is all good, and nobody is all bad.
Here’s some interesting facts about this country for people who would argue. There are roughly two million volunteer organizations through which over seventy-five million people donate time, energy and money to help other people, animals and the environment. These numbers are slightly below pre-covid reports, but have been on the rise for years since returning to some degree of normalcy after the pandemic. They also do not reflect all of the charitable work and donations organized by churches that have always been a fundamental source for good works. There are hundreds of thousands of recognized churches in the US, and millions of people attending them are donating time, energy and money to help the neediest people in their immediate communities. I’ve been to dozens of churches in my lifetime, and they all had weekly events meant for their members to contribute to the betterment of their community. There are reports that general, unorganized acts of kindness are increasing as well. I’m a union member and i know hundreds of other union members, most of whom have taken opportunities to donate their time, energy and money through union organized events. Also not recorded in the statistics, unless organized in conjunction with other non-profits that have to report.
Most people are mostly good. It’s irrefutable. What is true is that anyone who believes otherwise is part of the problem. They are doing NOTHING positive and b*tching that nobody else is doing anything positive. If they were actually going out of their way to contribute meaningfully, then they would be meeting lots of other people who are contributing meaningfully. The rest of us are doing what we can. I have volunteered hundreds of times. I’ve been turned away multiple times because they had more volunteers than they had jobs to be done.
It’s not difficult, and it costs nothing. Just be kind.

Nah. There are and always have been characteristics by which most people can objectively qualify others as “good” or “bad”. They transcend cultures and generations. Based on that fact, it is objectively true that most people are mostly good.

Humans are not inherently good or inherently evil. We are capable of love and creativity and self sacrifice. We are also capable of lies, greed, jealousy, violence, theft, and murder. Our social behaviors are complex. Our more complex brains come with more complex mental health issues. What you get from any given human in any given situation spans a huge range of possibilities. But the typical human can be counted on to avoid risk while trying to gain acceptance from their fellow humans. That's usually the safest approach to life.

Overall, looking at humanity as a group, yes I think there is mostly a "goodness"... However there are exceptions that you hear about on a daily basis that sort of "ruin it" for us.
