Why do so many people mistakenly believe suicide is selfish?

ya it is very selfish.
I have responded to way too many of them, those that are just seeking attention, and those that unfortunately have been successful over the years, and I get to see first hand and close up what it does to those that are left behind, as well as those that are there to trying to help.

Because it is inherently selfish. It is done for one reason and that is for themselves.

No. No one actually wants to commit suicide. It’s done because your feelings of hopelessness and pain outweigh your ability to cope. It’s called “selfish” by some as a defensive mechanism because they are not understanding why they did what they did.

Yes they actually do want it because as you say they're in a state of hopelessness and pain, where they've lost the faith in their ability to cope. They only see one option out and that is to commit suicide. The least selfish thing to do is to stay in that state of hopelessness and pain for others, most do for a long time, and I fully understand how not everyone can keep it up and do the one thing that benefits them in that given moment.

Anything that is bothering you to the point of suicide is just me temporary situation. Suicide is a permanent solution.

I understand that. But you have to understand someone who is suicidal is not in right frame of mind. Many of them are completely convinced that their family is better off without them.
