Trump in the "early days" had a lot of business contacts with mafia controlled construction entities and also had subordinates such as his former attorney with direct connections to the mafia. There is also evidence that Trump helped the mafia to launder some of their money through Trump businesses which might go to explain why Trump always "conveniently" had large cash injections whenever he got into financial troubles.
