The Trump administration plans to propose opening federal waters in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to offshore drilling, two people familiar with the plan said Wednesday, a move that is likely to antagonize coastal states governors — and make a direct jab at California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The administration is expected to offer acres off the southern coast of California and “at least a small sliver” of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, one of the people said. It was unclear if that would include waters off Florida, where elected leaders of both parties have opposed drilling along their shoreline for decades because of the risk to the state’s tourism-based economy. Interior’s plan, a framework used to schedule offshore lease sales in federal waters for a five-year period, could change by the time the initial proposal becomes a finished product.

No drilling takes place now off the Atlantic Coast, though companies like Exxon Mobil had explored that option in the past. Oil production in the Pacific Ocean has declined for decades amid tighter California regulations that make it difficult to transport the oil from federal waters to the state’s coastline.

A bigger motive may be Trump forcing Newsom to take a stand on the issue. Newsom, who had for years tightened state regulations on drilling, has more recently tried to moderate his position on fossil fuel production as he has increased his profile as a liberal foil to Trump.

Waste of time. Putting aside that oil is a dying industry, oil companies already have way more locations than they are using so "allowing" them to drill even more is ignoring the fact that they simply dont want to.

This has gotten so sad that I dont know if Trump just dont realize that it won't impact oil prices as opposed to this just being an attempt at a powerplay to demonstrate his power as "king". Either way, its not very impressive to me and I got no reason to believe that any new oil is going to be drilled off the coast because of this.

I'm against it. The main reason is that I'd rather be the last with oil then the first to run out. We should hoard the oil and use oil from elsewhere.

Oil is a world commodity. The little extra the US would extract would make little difference in the world supply, which determines the price.

Oil supply is finite, peak oil extraction is already past us. Better make the move to renewable energies at a comfortable pace while we still have a buffer instead of being forced to do it at the end, no?

Oil companies has bought up rights to drill in far more locations than they actually utilize. Giving them more is not going to magically make them drill more oil since that was never where the bottleneck was.

Trump was the guy who initially signed the bill forbidding that. LOL I know this seems counter intuitive, buy you won't find oil companies wanting to drill with oil at its current price levels. It costs more to get it out the ground, or ocean bottom, than it's worth. The reason the US has lost oil rigs is because companies can't AFFORD to drill, so they shut down. "Drill, baby drill", is just a Republican dog whistle for idiots.

I think it's a great idea. The timing is good too. The world is kinda in a recession. Lots of bubbles are about to burst. It would put a lot of pressure on the development of BRICKS. And probably it would make the tarrifs even easier to use.

The break even point for US companies to drill for oil in the US is $60-65 a barrel. Oil will have to go up before there will be any drilling.
