Did rap music really do any good for society?

I live in Turkey. And after American rap, Turkey is the second biggest producer and contributor for rap. There are 1000 famous rappers. Like Ceza, very famous here.

When we were teenagers, we thought hip hop culture and rap music as a great thing because of these rappers' propagandas in the country. Our parents mocked us, or sometimes even they said rap music is shit and the work of punks and thugs and idiots.

But we didn't listen to them. And now look at the rap today, our parents are very right.

Even the best rappers in the United States for the last 40 years, did rap really do any good thing for the society? Because of this rap shit, I even wasted my life and time. Rap was that important in our lives. We thought it could change the world with such powerful social and politic messages.

Rap, which stands for “Rhythm And Poetry” did quite a lot. Rap was one of the foundations of black culture in the US, it’s an incredibly unique song form and it mimics the old oral traditions of storytelling in a new way. It became a staple, one that was quickly adopted because white people can’t think of anything original that’s also good. Rap can be anything from a stirring romantic poem to a grandstanding piece exhibiting one’s power, to just having a good time with good music, all of which have meaning to the millions of people who hear it. It honors the old and gives way to the new, just because it doesn’t benefit you specifically doesn’t mean it has no value.

Yeah, because it’s a culture unlike any other on earth. Black americans had to build their own culture from the ground up after being disconnected from their roots when their ancestors were taken as slaves, having their languages erased, their religions, their ways taken away. That’s why it’s so exciting, this is new, this is self-made and it has things no other culture on earth has. You can call it “ghetto” as a derogatory term if you want to, but that just highlights the still present struggles of a culture created by underdogs who are constantly fighting against a system made to oppress them, and us too.

It is, it denotes the physical ghettos, which are infamously poor housing. Calling something ghetto is equivalent to calling someone a poor loser

No. You don't know about the hip hop culture. I was raised with it since the age of 3.

If it meant that way, they wouldn't create songs like ghetto Queen, ghetto quran, my ghetto etc etc. And ghetto tattoes. By the best rappers such as 2pac, 50 etc.

They reclaimed the term, much like how the LGBTQ+ community reclaimed “queer” but that doesn’t stop people from using it as an insult

Anything can be used as insult but in the hip hop culture, ghetto is a very holy place like heaven.

You just sound like you are bitter because you expected a musical genre to somehow change the world and you feel you wasted your time on wasted expectations.

Rap is an expression of feeling and creativity like all other musical forms. "It" can't do anything. It's the people of the world fighting for whatever injustices happen out there, that are actually the ones doing things and making changes. Rap and other music is only a vehicle for modern day story telling.

Maybe, but I really like the concept of rap music, fast and catchy. And ever genre has shitty songs in the end, just that it is assumed more shitty songs are present under rap because it is perceived as 'rebellious'. Or indeed many shitty songs are actually present under rap because it is so much easier and cheaper to compose than other kinds of music which makes it easier for unserious and undedicated people to make a rap too.
