In short, Trump is tariffing fertilizer from Canada to promote production in the USA. That times time to spin up. Fertilizer is an input cost and has been going up. By controlling and promoting, the idea would be to control the cost and lower costs.

But that will take time and prices will go up... unless some setup up to produce more fertilizer.

Well let's see, it takes about 3 years to build a fertilizer plant and get it into production. It's a dirty potentially dangerous production and storage facility to have in your backyard. So good luck getting that new domestic production up and running anytime soon.

America produces a lot of fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizers are produced from natural gas and clearly the USA produces the most oil/natural gas in the world. We have nitrogen fertilizer plants all over the nation. Florida has some of the largest phosphate mines in the world. Canada does produce a lot of potash, but so does the USA, Israel, Russia, etc. Canada isn't the only player in town.

More US farmers filed for bankruptcy in the first 8 months of 2025 than all of 2024. Making fertilizer more expensive for them isn't going to help. Canada sells potash and fertilizer to Brazil, China, Indonesia, India as well as the EU so this isn't a threat Canada takes seriously. There are other buyers ready to trade.

I'm in the process of patenting a machine that takes Trump's speeches AND Truth Social posts, and turns them into fertilizer. All the parts are made here in the USA so they'll be no tariffs or import fees. The cool thing - it's retro-active and it's a perpetual motion machine. It never stops. And me being the "socialist" that I am, I'm going to give it away for free and save the farmers!!

By the way, I DO expect the Nobel Peace prize for inventing this.

@sonic1000 Canada's tariff on US Dairy is only after a quota has been reached. Canada has never imported enough dairy from the US for that tariff to have ever been implemented. Trump signed that trade deal in 2018 so he was fine with it then. The reality is, there has never be tariff added to US dairy coming into Canada.

They use other tools to stop tings like... chinese cars from wiping out our auto industries. we've let the system be imbalanced long time and fed these rising powers. we are retracting as one would from a biting snake. it doesn't look good nor feel good.
CNN and MSNBC produce a lot of gas that if captured, could be used to make fertilizer! It seems not a single person working there produces anything beneficial, only natural gas. We should capture it to avoid global climate change and burn it... clean burning CNN and MSNBC natural gas! I like it.
I do prefer Canadian dairy... gotta be honest! They make better milk, US standards... something is wrong. more things for the admin to fix.

@sonic1000 The tariff is in place but the quota is so high that its never been implemented. US dairy has never had tariffs applied since Trump signed that deal.
We also have higher dairy standards so there isn't much of a demand for US dairy

There are 195 countries in the world but only one imposes tariffs. The one country is America. And even though Clinton, Biden and Obama praised the brilliance of tariffs, Trump is the first president to ever impose them on other countries.
