It’s my belief that only trustworthy people of impeccable intelligence and credentials should hold positions of influence and authority. Believing in junk science and conspiracy theories should disqualify an individual.

Yes, and in the USA, that's primarily the job of the president, not to nominate terrible candidates, and the job of the Senate to reject them.

Where a small group of academics proved that they could get complete rubbish published by the most esteemed scientific journals and publications, as long as they supported popular rhetoric. Who determines what is junk science and conspiracy theory? Both sides have different thoughts on that. To let anyone determine what is and isn't okay is to let whoever is in power decide how you live your life.
