Why are there some adults that can’t drive?

I mean why? If you can get yourself to places from public transportation fine but what if you end up in a rural community and whatever? How are you going to get to places? I’m a relationship they’re shouldn’t be only one person that drives? For me that would be a red flag. I have a friend that’s 36 and can’t drive. seriously? Someone that old can’t drive?

I couldn't drive for years because a traumatic brain injury left me with double vision and epilepsy. It took years to get medical clearance and the actual ability to drive.

Other reasons I've heard from people who don't drive:

- Anxiety
- Scared of it because someone close died in a car accident
- Legally prohibited because of a DUI or other traffic offence
- Elderly and poor reaction time
- workaholic sees driving as an inefficient waste of productive time (he has a chauffer)

Other reasons I know of but haven't met someone hiving as a reason:
- Severe medical problems
- Can't afford car insurance
- Can't afford a car
- Intellectual disability
In a city and don't need to drive/parking is a giant cost
- Agressive cost-cutting (some financial freedom community people might do this)

This question gives the same vibe of that girl who asked "Why don't homeless people just buy houses?" There are obvious reasons. Don't just assume that people are idiots.

I had a friend who technically knew how to drive, but didn't own a car and didn't drive because he was in a major car accident when he was in his early 20s where he was hit by an 18 wheeler that nearly ended his life. He admits he still has massive trauma about it, and has not gotten behind a wheel since. I live in a big city with poor transportation, and I just don't see how he gets around without it being so inconvenient. I used to give him rides when we worked together, but even I got sick of that, because he lived so out of my way that I stopped doing it and after a long night of hanging out, the last thing I wanted to do was then drive all the way back to take him across town. He accepted that he would need to take 2-4 busses for work because he simply refused to get back behind a wheel. I mean, that's one reason, but I think you have those that can't afford a car, so don't bother, or they live somewhere with amazing transportation and figure in smaller areas, there may be Ubers or cabs to take them other places.

That’s a weird reason to judge someone. Anyway, I had a neighbor who didn’t learn to drive/get her license until her mid thirties. She grew up in New York and relied on public transportation to get everywhere. Therefore, there was no need to learn how to drive.

Some people (like me) just don't feel comfy behind the wheel of 2 tons of speeding metal that can kill someone if they make the slightest mistake. I don't MIND driving if it's like, driving my band home on the highway late at night from a gig in Erie or Youngstown and there's no traffic around but, being in loads of traffic with others around, I'm not at all thrilled with that! And, these days, where people are WAAAYYY more concerned about their precious phone than road safety, I don't want any part of that!!
My grandmother never learned until she was in her late 50's or so and mom didn't learn until she was at least in her 30's or 40's. My aunt Anna never drove!! She made it all the way to 100 without driving.

Not everyone lives in a place where a car is a necessity. Just because they can't drive now, doesn't mean they'd not be capable of acquiring a driver licence if they move into a rural community "and whatever"

How are they going places considering your case, of them living in rural communities "and whatever", is a possible event not a current. People have legs which they can walk on, there are bicycles, scooters, public transportation for further transport.

*In a relationship there shouldn't be. That one just annoyed me.

This question caught me completely by surprise.

I don't drive and neither do most of my friends. We live and work in a city with many better options. If for some reason I need a vehicle, ride sharing is always there. or subway, or bus, or bicycle share, or walk, or shuttle.

Cars are a huge waste of money. In the US, the total cost of owning a car is 70¢ per mile, on the average. That doesn't include maintenance and breakdown hassles.

There's no chance of me ending up in a rural community.

It is cheaper to drive bus or even taxi in some areas than to buy a car, pay the gas, insurance, tires and and and...

Some may have a trauma. Some maybe don't need.

I have a friend and she never learned. She never needed and now she is very old and does not have the money for the driver license and car and and and... she uses buses or friends and neighbors help her.

Well even though i can’t drive due to me never really taking any driving leasons due to everything else i had to do in life, i never had a problem with moving around since i moved out of home at 16 and also when im travelling to rural areas. There is always ways to get around that doesn’t require you to drive, and it’s not the end of the world not being able to drive lol.

If you are able to go everywhere that you want or need to go. Not having an automobile would be a considerable financial savings. Then there is parking.
As for myself. Living in a rural area. I would have a hard time being without a driver’s license and not relying on someone else to drive me.

My girlfriend can't, she doesn't have depth perception. I have tried, but I get sensory overload. There are reasons, you assuming that age determines ability is shortsighted. By that logic all 80-year-old people should be accomplished at brain surgery, they've had long enough to practice it.

My issue is money and PTSD. I can only drive ebikes and scooters. Windowed vehicles make my anxiety spike. I'm also on disability, so i can't afford the upkeep of a car. Scooter parts are mostly $30 and under, and simple enough that i can work on it myself.

Some people are afraid to drive. Some people think it's too expensive. Some people can actually use public transportation. Here in Southern California, if you don't have a car and can't drive, you are stranded. You can't go anywhere unless you walk. There is public transportation, but most of it is too dangerous and too inconvenient to bother using.

This is probably very rare especially in places that don't have good public transportation like a city. Why don't you just ask this one friend why you're seeing this anecdotal example? If you have asked this person what was their answer?

If you have a mental problem with your brain that you can't help, that is a good reason not to drive. I drive a little, but I don't drive a lot because my brain doesn't process as fast as the average person does.
