Trump is no longer just a politician, he has become a symbol, almost a brand. For some of his supporters, he is never wrong:
if he lies → it's "strategic"
if he is convicted → it's "the system"
if he loses an election → it's "obviously rigged"
We no longer talk about facts, we talk about faith.
The classic ingredients of cult worship (it's all there) Providential leader: "Only he can save America" (the others? Traitors or incompetents).
Narrative of persecution: the media, judges, universities, the FBI... everyone is against him, therefore against us. Merging of identity and persona: criticising Trump = attacking America, "real people", the people. Quasi-religious symbols: flags, slogans, messianic rallies, merchandising as relics.
Of course, not all Trump voters are worshippers. Many vote for him out of rejection of the elites, cultural progressivism, or economic calculation. But the hard core is clearly in a quasi-religious mindset.
How did we end up with this cult of personality surrounding Trump?
Is he a perfect person? Absolutely not. I think his way of speaking makes him look extremely unintelligent in almost every scenario. I think some of his decisions have been questionable. Like the tariff war he had on all the countries for a while.
But honestly, I'm still a Trump supporter (as a Canadian) because, while he's a bit narcissistic, he deeply cares about his country and he's not afraid to speak his mind. I support his decision to take out Maduro and save the Venezuelans. And I would love if he saved the Iranian people as well. It would also be nice to see an end to the tragedy happening in Gaza.
I also agree with pretty much all of his standpoints politically (other than abortion). You need to protect your borders and prevent illegal migrants from running your country to the ground both culturally and economically. Your country's citizens should come first. And I'm sick of all the cancel culture, alphabet brigade propaganda, and just overall the intolerant left in society.
Do I think there could have been better candidates? Absolutely. But he was the best of the options given. Kamala Harris even made a statement that she thinks everyone should be woke. She was a super feminist. And Biden couldn't even form a sentence.
If Trump was so bad, he would be like Maduro or the the Islamist leaders in Iran and kill or jail people for disagreeing with his views. And yet, because there is freedom of speech (something he believes in greatly), all the haters can speak their mind freely.
The thing that blows my mind is leftists claim he's such a bad person and a criminal when there's no evidence of him being such. If they had any slam dunk evidence against him, with all the haters he has, he'd already be put away.
If anything, the left is a cult of uninformed sheep who just listen to others without any detailed information on the matter themselves. They're the types to protest on the streets that taking Maduro was wrong. They're the types who protest for an open border. I know some people who have had experiences with Trump himself. 1) a businessman I heard on the radio talking about how he lost his business and life savings, when he asked Trump for financial advice. He tried to contact Trump after this--crickets. 2) A woman living in NYC whose husband had a grand piano business and sold Steinways around the world-- lost his business when Trump ordered a large amount of them (forget the amount, but it was enough) and NEVER paid for them. The woman's husband, after ;losing his business in NYC, never recovered from this and needed therapy for depression. 3) A near-deaf woman in PA, who I know from another website--met Trump in person years before he first became president--and she told me, he was not a decent man, "not a good man", her own words. Priests have said in their own words-- he is not a man who follows the teachings of Jesus--who reminds us to "Welcome the stranger"; to watch for liars, power-hungry hypocrites, and those who only seek riches.
How did we end up with this cult of personality? People want instant answers and help and don't bother to look at the source of where they are looking. He has poisoned the minds of many--mostly WEAK people--and it definitely shows here on this website.
I think Trump makes a lot more sense when you think of him (and his support base) as a reaction or a symptom of a problem, rather than the illness itself. Trump didn't create the problems that have people freaking out. He pointed them out, and a whole lot of his detractors have spent a lot of their lives not believing that those problems were real.
In his memoire, Obama actually talks about a policy decision the Democrats made to pursue identity politics to rally marginalized interest groups. Trump is the other side of that. In my opinion, without that decision, a guy like Trump doesn't ever get to power. The level of antagonism in broader society just isn't there anymore.
The reason Trump appeals to so many people is because what we were doing before didn't work. He represents giving the middle finger to a group who most common people regard as unbelievably condescending, people the common man blamed for stealing from them, people they saw as refusing to solve problems.
Trump came along and told those people that what they thought was both real, and that it was unfair and wrong. They saw Trump take genuine action that they believe improved their lives. Then they saw the legal and media attacks as validation that Trump was right and had the authorities scared. And then those assassination attempts, in my opinion, are what really tipped people over the edge.

He was voted into office by a skeptical country but had actually fulfilled many of his campaign policies. He created a brand before becoming a political candidate. He ran his campaign with branding. You may have a few people wearing shirts or gear supporting a candidate during the election or campaigns. Trump took it to a whole new level, MAGA caps and a lot of campaign merchandise. In the 2016 election a guy almost blew a gasket when he found out that it wasn't actually legal to wear a Trump shirt to vote (no electioneering within 200 feet of a certified voting location). He's also loud and a bully. That is endearing to those who remember when they were bullies and wish it was still socially acceptable to do that.
His biggest promoters are Democrats. They are always raising his profile and saying stupid stuff that makes him look solidly sensible.

In my own professional life , I used to ask "what can I do". The answer was usually not much, hardly anything. Then I started asking "what must I do" and got vastly different answers that gave me 90-95% better results.
My view is colored by that experience and I'm OK with "what must I do" answers. Great politicians probably ask themselves "what must I do". At least Churchill and Lincoln did.

Europeans must devote more resources to their defence; they must be able to deter Russia, and the US has its interests in the Indo-Pacific, but Trump's approach may ultimately have negative consequences.
Moreover, Trump will probably not succeed in separating Russia from China.
:) Yes there are always values and perspectives behind every opinion which I find to be the most interesting. Sometimes they are so embedded we are not even consciously aware of them.
So I'll tell you mine. First perspectives.
Predominantly I see our times as being similar to those at the beginning of WW2 with autocratic powers seeking hegemony. Russia and China could have stayed in the club of nations trading profitably and peacefully but have chosen not to. I see it as a "peace in our time" moment and appeasement is misplaced.
Secondly, the Germany & Japan model is a complete failure in 2026. It just didn't work with Russia and China because they have taken industrial and commercial advancement as means to flex muscle. The West created the problem and de-industrialising them is the solution.
In terms of values, my major one is belief in the nation state. The Global Left is against the nation state even if they don't say that out loud very often. Currently this most evidenced by encouraging illegal immigration. A core Australian value is illegals should be interned on small Pacific islands cause that shuts down illegal immigration immediately. I ascribe to that.
"Common man" values do indeed appeal to me. At best most Global Left views are mostly FITH. As you noted, at top, gender is a niche issue. The niche tail shouldn't wag the dog. Most Global Left views are highly niche, and therefore worthy of immediate rejection, but that is not to say I don't support ones of broad applicability. I am selective. Universal health care for one example.
Russia and China won't be separated by anything other than de-industrialisation. Russia is a fair way down that path. Oil wells are freezing up nicely. China is finding limits to what the West will buy from them and the Global South is not going to save them.

I don't want to argue the Chinese economy as, whilst I regularly watch two quite sober channels on it, I am quite deficient on economics. It does seem China is in pretty bad shape with deflation and possibly stagflation. Local government are issuing bonds at an official 6.5% but are paying, after various discounts, an effective rate of 14.5% in order to continue current expenditure.
Sitting in Oceania, the reason I smiled as Trump tariffs increased daily is that I reasoned Xi would have to put in trade retaliations as part of his Taiwan calculus after casting an eye over how it worked out for Russian.
It is not just American interests that are threatened by China it is more broadly Western interests. China showed it's face with rare earths.
Whilst you are closer to Beijing than I am , it feels closer for me :)
Note that Trump had to make significant concessions to China on issues they consider non-negotiable, particularly for the American shipbuilding industry.
Once again, I am not interested in morality in international relations. You cannot lecture China on morality when you see the actions of Western countries.

It goes way beyond trump, it's all over the world. It's a turning of history away from globalism back toward nationalism. Fascism and communism fell, now western globalism is falling too. There will be a multi polar world not one run by the World Economic Forum or other similar organizations. There will always be another Trump if not in the US he will appear in another country and then another. Nayib Bukele is an example of this or Victor Orban.
Well to give Trump supporters the element of the doubt I think anger plays a role. Anger on being left behind by a system or society that they feel no longer represents them. Of course most of the time they are left behind due to choices they made themselves but when you are angry you often do not think clearly. Thus they support an individual who is really the poster boy for a system that is working against them. Anger clouds judgement.
During the pandemic, almost everyone who thought that it was a hoax, or thought that the whole vaccine thing was "government overreach", were on the far right. So, it is funny that the same people who thought the pandemic was tyranny, have no problem with a president that tries to step around the normal checks and balances. What you say in your original post I think is spot-on.

You probably won't like to hear it but, Obama. If Obama weren't elected we never would have had Trump. When the pendulum swings hard one way it swings equally as hard back the other way. And I'm not saying we couldn't, or wouldn't have eventually ended up with a Trump-esque president eventually. It's been a slow march to this for the last 45 years. Obama just hastened it.
So many people dislike him that he was elected President of the United States twice. Even if the elections had been by universal suffrage, Trump would have won the second presidential election.
Once again, opposition is normal in a democracy. How much of the American population does this site represent? What's more, I've seen many people here who support Trump.

He is the first since Reagan to actually do what the people actually want and not (entirely) cater to the one world government that is trying to form and violate the freedoms of the world.
I dont think he's perfect but he is far preferrable to anyone else the US has had since, I'd argue, Coolidge. Even then, the US was ass-raped with the disease Trump is trying to solve but Coolidge was the "do nothing" president and prevented a lot of the consequences for the time being.
