I mean if you really think about it, enabling dumb people to vote is probably not the best idea

True democracy, where everyone votes on things, has never worked. As this question points out, some of the voters are ignorant and unaware.

A Representative Democracy, where people vote for people to govern them, is better. In theory at least, the elected ones have experience and are more knowledgeable.

But even a Representative Democracy has its flaws. A small bloc of people can elect someone to represent them solely because they will take care of them. And career politicians can stay in power much longer than they should

But it's the best form of government we humans have one up with... Until someone finds something better.

@Geminiaqua Interesting. The potential problem with meritocracy is who determines the appropriate merit levels objectively. They would most likely be determined subjectively, which introduces human bias and error.

Yes, Iโ€™m not such a pretentious asshole that I genuinely believe another person should have less rights than I do just because I think Iโ€™m smarter.

Of course, direct democracy is a form I aim for. The masses being able to vote on whatever is what assures elites less chance of power.
Though it shouldn't be done like Australia as forcing you to be on register to vote is an obvious ploy by some elites who think it can benefit them somehow, surely understanding most will choose to vote on bias quickly and only a few will be smart enough to spoil their vote.

Yes, America is 250 years old. It has a constitutional Republic form of government but the majority plays a major role in deciding both leadership and polices. Sometimes this includes the more deluded and misinformed people in our civilization.. Still, time and again it is shown that the system works.

In theory, yes. I think it's a generally good system for the people. The problem though is... well, people.

This is probably the best explanation...

What do you mean if we really think about it?

We have 2,000 years of political philosophy behind us lol, so it's not going to be easy to find new loopholes. Discussing pros and cons of egalitarianism is like digging very old graves for absolutely no benefit

Thankfully unlike USA and UK, Australia has compulsory voting. Which I love - 💗😚 some would say it's a stronger democracy complete with crown 👑 because we've demanded our populace vote once they hit 18 💘
    And I love that.
Which is more democracy - voluntary voting or making it compulsory that every vote, counts.

Compulsory but you can just spoil the vote, I would do that all the time therefore pretty much pointless to even force me. I'll just keep writing down a certain someone's name.

@nicholasofaustralia Would you know? Does Australia allow a NONE OF THE CANDIDATES vote or is a voter required to pick at least one? Australia has preference voting, at least in some elections, doesn't it?

It depend on everyone to vote because voting deals with issues that affect everyone. Even people who aren't very smart. They too should have a voice. Looking at American voting over the last 10 years or so. Apparently they have a pretty loud voice as it is.

And who gets to choose who is "too stupid to vote" ? In the US the really smart people mostly vote Democratic.

Pure democracy is mob rule. That is like a pride of lions and one ibex. I support a constitutional federal republic. Not a democracy
