Why do many people think that mentally disabled people shouldn’t have kids?

It’s not fair because they want to have kids but society pushes them away from it and think they should never be parents ever because they don’t think they could handle it. Why are they like that to autistic and intellectual disabled people? Why do they encourage them to be sterilized also? They didn’t chose to be disabled. What is this all about? What are your thoughts about this?

People who think that usually base it on concerns about child welfare and capacity, not just prejudice (though prejudice does exist).

Common arguments are:

• Worries about whether the parent can safely and consistently care for a child

• Concerns about severe hereditary conditions

• Fear of neglect due to limited support systems


That said, the issue is complex.
Having a mental or intellectual disability doesn’t automatically mean someone can’t be a capable parent.

Support, severity, and individual functioning matter a lot.

The debate is really about capability and resources, not simply diagnosis.
