Here it goes , I believe in State Rights. I believe states should have the right to conduct state and local elections anyway they like. Again State and Local , not Federal offices.

I propose a two ballot solution for states no wanting voter ID's. One ballot for State and Local offices in which no ID required and A ballot for Federal offices that requires voter ID's. So if you refuse to show ID's , you can't vote for Congressman, Seantors , or President, but you can still vote for all State and Local offices.

Of course if you live in a state that requires Voter ID's , then you show ID's or don't vote at all.

Good solution or not?

Forms of ID's include Social Security card, Drivers License , Travel License, Billing Statements, work ID. This basically just keeps you from voting twice and proving you are the registered name.

This voter ID thing has been used to obstruct the vote in Red States forever. Along with "cleansing the voter rolls", shutting down or never opening polling places in areas where the people in power don't want anyone voting, poll taxes, etc.

No, I don't believe in states rights. Some of our states are corrupt as hell and can't be trusted to run free and fair elections. That's why we have the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act which has recently been gutted by our Supremely Corrupted Court.

We have voter rolls. Every state I have lived in already requires some form of ID to have a ballot handed to you at a polling place. If you are gonna require some specific form of acceptable ID, it needs to be free for everyone and easily obtainable for the poor, the elderly, the disabled, and people in remote areas. The most obvious candidate would be state driver's licenses / state ID for non drivers. And there would have to be a period to allow people to comply. One 4 year election cycle should be enough.

The Constitution did not anticipate institutional corruption in elections as a way to exclude parts of the population. The Constitution also originally excluded women from voting. Was that OK too? The Constitution is not perfect. It needs periodic maintenance.

I was surprised the first time I voted that I didn’t need ID because it seems insane to me that you wouldn’t have to prove you’re registered voter and a citizen of this country so hopefully that requirement is mandated everywhere

Democrats also swear that they won’t be able to figure out how to acquire a photo ID to vote. There should be two or more election days in every state in the United states. The first election which would be a national holiday will be the election only of the president of the United states. Every voter in the presidential election should be required to produce a social security number. That social security number could be provided an exactly the same way that an instant background check is used at gun shows. A national biometric database should exist that connects every valid social security number to a name and legal address. Social security membership would be renewed from time to time and include fingerprinting and a photograph. Just like your driver's license. That would eliminate non-legal voters and also voting in elections in multiple states. With modern artificial intelligence technology, this should not be a time-consuming issue.

Members of Congress should be elected according to the US constitution. The states would regulate elections of all federal officers with the exception of the president. This same day could be used for the election of state county and City officers. It it will be up to the states to regulate identification requirements.

That's a reasonable idea but difficult, and costly, to implement. States without voter ID would essentially have to run two separate elections, the mechanics and software would be hard, and election security would be further compromised.

You are correct about states rights when it comes to elections, but the Constitution does give Congress the legal ability to establish rules for federal elections.

No ID necessary, but I did have to provide my ssn, as well as other personal information to identify myself.

Man , I forgot to include that. To get a mail in , prove who you are with ID's . SS is a form of ID. Many places want Drivers License , SS card , and a billing Statement from last month.

You know, I am somewhat surprised (and in other ways, not) that they don't have registration, at least they don't in my state, electronically verified.

My passport was my first one, so I had to do it the mail in way. However, I read that you can now renew online, taking a photo with your phone and returning the old passport. If you can get a federal ID renewed electronically, they should be able to figure out how to do ballot requests securely.

I don't know a heck of a lot about computers, but I know certain states allow you to scan your driver's license and have it in the wallet on an iPhone as valid ID.

I can't think of state that doesn't require some form of ID to vote. The issues aren't with identification; it's with denying certain types of identification. If my state required a driver's license to vote, I couldn't. I have a license but it's a "non-drivers" license because I don't drive. Some people have other forms of ID that are legal and issued by the government. They shouldn't be denied because their state wants them to have a type of ID they don't have.

All that happens, if you demand voter ID, is it a certain percentage of the population will be unable or unwilling to bother getting it? And as a result will not be able to vote, which is of course your whole reason for demanding it in the first place. I agree with @msc545 completely on this one. Nothing about voting should be done at the federal level except the overall ability for everyone having the right to vote.

If states want to implement this stupid ID law in their books, then whatever, but it doesn't need to be a country wide issuance.

All this really is for is to disenfranchise women and trans voters, who typically vote more democratic, from actually having a say in the elections.

There are already calls from the far right to repeal the 19th amendment completely. If they ever succeed (which they won't), then they have free reign to just eliminate everyone except rich white males or white homeowners from voting.

Each step they make to make voting harder is an admission they can't win on their own and bending for a compromise in how voting should go with making voting different than just an every citizen can vote is just an admission that you are not able to fight for people's rights. What sort of responsibility are you referring to? I mean, yeah, you're right. You have to be responsible enough to think about it, hopefully to make your choices, and to go out of your way. Remember that voting results are the result of mass action. The decisions of a single person are unlikely to have much effect, particularly in large elections. This is also why it's so difficult, if not completely impossible, to commit voting fraud. One vote, or even 10 or even 1000, one way or the other, is not going to make any difference in the outcome.
