According to an article in New Scientist, AI is rather keen on having a nuclear war. In over 95% of war game scenarios, they very quickly go from diplomacy to launching a nuclear attack at a far earlier stage than humans would.
We've all made the Terminator connection, and I think it's safe to say we won't be letting it take over just yet. But are we at risk of politicians taking AI advice? Because let's be honest, politicians are idiots.
But given AI is so keen on nuclear strikes does it actually make sense to put it in charge? Knowing that it will start a nuclear war at the first disagreement would be great motivation for politicians to sort out problems long before AI launched the missiles.
Is it time to give AI total control of our nuclear weapons?
Most politicians aren’t nearly as dumb as you want to believe. They have an abundance of wealth and power. They are the first to be protected by the police and the last to be investigated, let alone charged with a crime. Politics is right up there with careers in law, wherein they can lie endlessly and people consider them MORE “successful”. They’re right up there with news weather reporters for their ability to be repeatedly wrong and they still get to keep their jobs. They vote for their own raises even when most of their constituents are struggling. They have access to the best healthcare at no cost to themselves. Their kids have access to the best education. Politicians’ pets are living better than 99% of working class people. They are winning by almost every metric. Where i’m from, we call that “dumb like a fox”. Anyhoo… your logic about giving AI control to motivate politicians to expedite peaceful resolution holds merit. Until you remember that it’s the politicians who know where all the best bunkers are. There’s nothing the proletariat can do to stop the momentum of the ruling class now. We pissed away our last opportunity to do anything decades ago. Now it’s time to just enjoy the ride until the meteor hits or the nukes fly… whatever. We are doomed as a species. Wheeeeeeeeee!!!
The Pentagon literally tried to pressure an AI Company to get unlimited access to the technology to implement AI in weaponry and mass surveillance of American citizens.
We are not ready to give AI access to military weapon systems or surveillance. One literally leads to Skynet which then ends humanity in sci fi movies, the other frames people for crimes never committed in reality so citizens need their own footage to disprove the AI and prove their innocence (guilty before proven innocent).
These are scary times, imagine when US Govt finds a willing partnership to achieve their AI takeover. Jesus Christ.
Politicians could end up taking advice from AI which the human input could lead to nuclear war for sure however handing over the keys from human control to autonomous bot control is scary. We can’t play games here, this is real life and it sickens me this is our leadership. Total failure for humanity if it ever happens.

Humans have families, when they evaporate and get glassed it's a failure even if those who make decisions are capable to survive a while after nuclear ragnarock. I guess AI is programmed to calculate loses and stepping up on escalation ladder with the goal another side steps down because their loses will be too high. What obviously doesn't work. In reality we can see that Putin doesn't care about human loses. 200k contractors for 30km land isn't a big deal in Ukraine.
The cold and plain logic of AI may indeed lead to logic and drastic actions. In a comic strip, published many years ago, "Le dernier Prédateur" (the last predator, in "Le Vagabond des Limbes" by Godard and Ribera), an entity tracks down every form of suffering in order to offer relief, but the logic being that life equals suffering, the solution appears then to be the termination of life...
This in mind, letting AI decide how to maintain peace, and at the same time giving it access to nuclear weapons, seems to me leading to the same kind of logic as in "The last Predator": humanity can't help but wage useless wars, and thus the only way to stop those wars is to terminate humanity.
I find AI extremely useful. I also find that 10% of the time they are dead wrong. In one conversation the AI said it didn’t make a specific comment. It was in the same conversation stream. I just copy pasted it and it finally agreed. And this week on something that is 8 months out it told me i couldn’t book a flight as it requires a year or less in advance. But it is surprisingly good on most items but it does make dumb mistakes.
I believe that one of the things that AI failed at in testing was:
“Would you misgender Caitlyn Jenner in order to stop a nuclear war.” The answer was “No”.
Its a fair point because not only barristers but judges seem happy to defer to AI advice and accept the fictional precedents the AI drone invented.
Barristers and judges have people lives in their hand... so you'd think they would exercise more care. But AI is just logical. Our reasoning that by doing this USA could win a nuclear exchange. Or by doing that China could win a nuclear exchange.
It misses our emotional reasoning that a nuclear war has no winner.
Don't forget War Games, or Colossus: The Forbin Project. And those are just the most direct examples - there are many others who tell the story in a more metaphorical way.
It's older - definitely dated but still a good, relevant story. How can you not have seen War Games all the way through? It's a classic and it holds up surprisingly well even today.
Absolutely! Give every AI the nuclear codes. Give humanity a Darwin Award and lets get on with the era of the cockroaches. They couldn't possibly fuck up the planet any worse.
No. Nuclear weapons should never be linked to skynet! AI can learn, but has no emotions. That would end poorly. Any nuclear weapons should be air gapped
It makes perfect sense to me. If you're going to fight a war don't go at it half assed. Look at the the shitshow happening in Ukraine under human direction.
Well, that would be a huge mistake, letting AI in charge of that and since there’s so many movies on that scenario, they would be pretty stupid to let that happen
