The thing is if you the left violence occur inside of a prison from one prisoner to another. It will soon migrate to the entire prison and you're going to have a prison riot on your hands. The best thing that you can do is run the prison in a way such that nobody prisoners or staff is ever injured or humiliated or did more distressed than they already are. People forget that prisons are for rehabilitation and rehabilitation is more important than punishment because most prisoners eventually return to the community.

If the prison administration allows prisoners to abuse each other very soon, prisoners will begin abusing the staff as well. And the situation will go completely out of hand as I attempted to say, The very best prisons and the ones that are most effective at rehabilitation are those that promote an aspect of respect between prisoners and staff and everyone associated with the prison.

I realize that some people think that prisons should be highly punitive because they have a personal need for revenge on prisoners and that is their problem and it should not be a task assigned to the state. Revenge driven behavior is just as bad, if not worse in many ways then crime driven behavior in general. The major task of the prison is to model civilized behavior for prisoners so that when they get out they too and can engage in civilized behavior.
