Why is America's financial district (s) all in New York as opposed to spread across U. S. States?

Like isn't the movie Trading Places set in Philadelphia, not New York? Isn't Los Angeles pretty much its own major capital city on status equivalence with New York City for fame and name recognition? Shrug? 😞😅

there are financial districts all over the country. nearly every city will have it's own. but NYC is the sort of central point. it is where the major stock exchanges are and it only makes sense if the major stock exchanges are in one place that it becomes a central financial center.

that said, more and more funds and groups are moving out of NYC. it isn't an exodus by any means and they almost always maintain some space in NYC. but, for example my friend works for one of the biggest (Goldmans), they have offices in multiple cities and my friend currently lives in Dallas

The short answer is tradition.

NYC became the center of shipping and import/export long before the US was an independent country, because of NYC's excellent natural port and river system, which made further distribution easier and cheaper.

Where you had massive amount of shipping, you also needed infrastructure. Shipyards, warehouses, accounting, and insurance. Those things first came into existence in Amsterdam, when it was the center of global trade, leading to the creation of a trade giant called the Dutch East India Company. Amsterdam set the model for other major shipping centers and the financial centers they became.

In the US, NYC was the biggest, but next was Chicago. Most goods in the Midwest were transacted in Chicago before making their way to NYC and then to other places in the world. The massive river system feeding into the Mississippi made Chicago an obvious point of exchange.

For any country that has any real ambition, secure access to a major ocean port is vital to the success of the country. That's the whole reason for the war in Ukraine - Russia, for all its great size, doesn't have a secure, year-round harbor to build a port, and used to rely on Ukraine for access to the Black Sea and on to the Mediterranean. Far from a secure, direct ocean port, but still the best it had, and the end of the USSR and the independence of Ukraine meant even that couldn't be counted on. Thus the annexation of Crimea and the following invasion of Ukraine with the goal of taking over the Donbass, giving Russia a clear corridor to Crimea and thus solidifying their control of the port.

Chicago - CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) and NYSE Chicago, Private Equity, and Hedge Finds, along with investment banking.

Dallas - Oil and TXSE (the Texas stock exchange), NYSE Texas is starting operations in 2026, along with investment banking.

Before the national capital was decided, Alexander Hamilton was lobbying to create the national bank that a significant number of congress wasn’t willing to support at the time. If the historical accuracy of the Hamilton musical holds any weight, the reason this changed is because Hamilton agreed to vote to place the nation’s capital in Virginia, which is now Washington, DC. In return for his votes the people who wanted the capital in Virginia also gave him enough votes to put his National Bank plan into effect. At the time, all of this took place in New York, and as the treasurer, Hamilton had no desire to make his home too far from his workspace so it was established there.

Because New York, found as New Amsterdam by the Dutch over 400 years ago was ALWAYS for trading. In other words, it has always been a place of financial dealings since the very beginning in 1624.

As for LA, no. If you lived there, you'd understand.

Nyc is just the most famous one. There's billions of dollars flowing through California and Texas too. In fact I'm pretty sure Texas has its own market too.

The nyc one is famous for a reason though it was arguably the first one and the little stereotypes we have about that industry for the most part come from there.

You do know that there are more financial industry jobs in Texas than New York now, right? Charlotte is also a big banking center. San Francisco still is to some extent too.
