How should I feel about IQ tests and living in a low-IQ world?

When I first joined the military I got officially tested and I was 98... they patted me on the back and said I was equivlent to Obomba... see what I did there.

Now though many years later I'm getting 142... I feel I was retarded. I'm also confused at how a whole bunch of people elected a retard as your president. Trump by the way is like in the 160's so don't try to mention him unless you're just retarded.

How should I feel about being in a world where retards have a say?

So if you're highly intelligent, basically all you can do is focus on whatever you have the power to influence. Your individual circle of personal autonomy. Cause everything else is fucked and you can't do shit about it cause in a democracy, less intelligent people than you get to determine what's gonna happen (cause statistically if your iq is 142, the vast majority of people is beneath that). So i personally still find it hard not to waste gray matter on things i can't change. I do care and it does bother me and i catch myself kind of obsessing with certain topics and it infuriates me that things are so obviously stupid but really you should focus on your personal scope. you can't fix the world. Brains are problem solving machines. if yours is efficient, you'll see more but if you focus on problems you can't solve, you'll burn out and get drpressed. try to do the best with what you have and that's about it man. focus on the joy of positively developing whatever you can influence.

The test scores can change to some extent depending on the test that's administered and the person administering it and the condition you're in when you take it. I would not worry about it too much. On most reputable tests, 98 is an average score, and 142 is probably an invalid score, given that it is so rare as to be almost unheard of. A change from 98, which seems plausible to 142, also seems very unlikely, and I would be concerned about the validity and reliability of the actual test.

I'm a neuropsychologist, and as part of that role, I'm an expert on these kinds of tests. I can tell you that unless you've taken the same test twice in a row, then any difference between the two tests is going to be invalid.

Well, you might have learned a lot of shit, but you've probably also forgotten a lot of shit. The test items have changed, and you won't have learned the specific things that the test is actually measuring. Unless you were feeling lousy the first time you took the test and you're feeling better the second time, or vice versa, things are probably not going to change more than about ten points.

IQ tests are designed to be stable, and for the most part, that stability persists over time, again, barring such things as severe head trauma or being stoned the first time and not stoned the second time, or things of that nature. Remember that your ability to learn is limited by your intelligence.

Have a bad night's sleep and anyone who has an intellectually demanding role knows how difficult the next day can be. Your intellectual capability varies depending on various factors, including sleep, food intake, emotional stability, what you focus on throughout the day.

You can train your brain in the space of a couple of days. Spend 3 days on tiktok, eating McDonalds, barely getting any sleep. Or spend those days reading, eating, sleeping well and generally learning. Your reading comprehension also changes very quickly depending on what you focus on. Spend a few days reading Shakespeare for example.

An emotional episode, stress or tiredness directly impacts your ability to think clearly, and therefore presumably, your ability to perform well on an IQ test. Some people get stressed by the idea of being tested.

IQ tests are clearly not that accurate. You can actually train yourself to do them, because the more you do them, the more you can see the patterns in the questions. This is probably why they used to say 'N*******' had an IQ score of 62. Presumably culturally determined by what that person focuses on and has done before.

@Levin I understand that you think that a variety of conditions can influence the results of an IQ test, and you are not entirely wrong about that. Certainly, some conditions can. If you are sick or tired or things of that sort, then yeah, you're not going to do as well. The differences are not as numerically substantial as you might think they are.

Again, you don't know how these things are scored, and you also do not know what items we use or don't use, and what the tests are actually designed to measure. I have many years of experience with this sort of testing, and I will tell you that you cannot train yourself to do them because there are no specific patterns in the questions. Although there are some things that are somewhat rhythmic, such as repeating a series of numbers, I guess you could probably train yourself to repeat long strings of numbers if you wanted to, but that is not the only thing we ask you about. If you really don't believe me about this, then here's what I'd suggest. I think what you should do is:
1. Find out what the original test that you took was called.
2. Find out what your actual score was or scores were on that test.
3. Now go and find a psychologist and have him give you the exact same test yet again.
I promise you that you will not see nearly as much of a difference as you think you're going to see.

I've had people in my team at vastly different levels. One was a mensa and another was below average. I ended up prefering the below average guy because he hated making mistakes. It took him twice as long to do anything but I could be certain it would be done well.

The Mensa guy was capable of not giving the task sufficient thought and making very intelligent mistakes.

I am thinking your intelligence did not shine through when you joined the military because you were intimated - perhaps hating mistakes like the guy above. But I am also pointing out that people lower on the IQ scale can be better than people higher up.

I also think there is a great common sense in the common people. They'll get it wrong at some elections but get it right at the next.

The average IQ is always exactly 100, by definition. So there is no such thing as a low IQ world.

I think it's the Flinn (?) affect that shows an increase in IQs over the decades. But that is just tested IQ, which does not necessarily mean they are actually smarter. Since IQ tests depend on a lot more than raw intelligence there is no way to know if it's really increasing or decreasing over time.

There are different kinds of IQ tests. Some rely heavily on scientific, mathematical, and abstract logic. Others are memorizing facts and language. Someone who scores 140 on the first may be nearly average on the second, and vice versa.

If you swung from a 98 to a 142 then someone is doing the tests wrong.
Maybe after a traumatic brain injury or something your IQ could shift a lot but generally you should be scoring within 10 point error margin.

That said, IQ tests don't do anything. They are a good way of knowing how easily you can adapt in life but they don't have anything to do with your happiness or character.
Being far above or far below 100 is pretty lonely too.
